I did a little math this morning while getting filled up at the station... by the way, I got over 30 mpg on my last tankful.

2002 6 cylinder Jeep Wrangler: 19 gallon tank had a range of ~200 miles w/ REGULAR gas

2005 MINI Cooper S: 13 gallon tank has a range of ~400 miles PREMIUM gas

Had I filled my old Jeep at 2.97/gallon, I would have paid: $56.43

Filling my MINI at $3.09/gallon, I paid a "slight" $39.27

To go the SAME 400 miles in my old Jeep would have cost me $112.86!

When I explained this to my darling wife, she was pleased... we had a little debate this morning that I was paying the same price buying 93 Octane instead fro the MINI instead of 87 Octane with my old JEEP.
I knew I was correct.

 

You can also let her know that your MINI gets the best mileage when you use the required high octane gasoline. If you tried to save a dollar buying the cheap stuff, you will get worse gas mileage and the car won't run as well, eliminating any perceived savings at the pump.

So keep giving your MINI the good stuff!

 

You only have a $0.12 difference between Regular and Premium? Out west it's at least $0.20, and sometimes more. On another note, gas prices are bizarre. On the recent MTTS leg, I filled up at home (nuclear and oil free Santa Cruz) for $3.22, in Santa Barbara (the place with oil derricks right off the coast) it was $3.63

The funny part is you can probably fit more stuff in the MINI. Not so good at going over rocks though...

P.S. You are wrong. She is right. That's just the way it is. Do not allow facts/numbers to influence/distort this basic truth.

 

I've also justified using the 93 octane in the MINI versus using the Pickup with 87 octane, but with the numbers you've shown 200 miles on a 19 gallon tank that comes out to 10.5 MPG. I can't believe you're getting that bad of a mileage on the Jeep.

 

Oh my gas mileage was THAT bad. No joking. Auto tranny, 30" BFG tires, 3.73:1 differentials, drove her "spiritedly" AND offroaded from time to time... When gas hit $2.25/gal I sold my beloved Wrangler on e-Bay in one week for $10,000.00

I'm THRILLED with my MINI but do miss the ol' Jeep from time to time. It's actually still pictured on http://www.raingler.com under customer photos (has the camo rear tire cover).

My HEMI Durango gets 18.5-19.5 MPG on the highway doing between 70-80. It calls for mid grade but I burn regular on the highway. I see no difference between the grades. The Durango has a 27 gallon tank I get about 400 miles before fill up.

My TDI NB gets about 48 MPG on diesel my best tank was 750 miles on a 15 gallon tank. (Note all TDI owners know a venting trick to get an extra 1.75 gallons into the tank to make it almost 17 gal)

 

400 miles on 27 gallons is 14-15 MPG

 

I never run out of gas so I fill up just under 1/4 tank add maybe 22-24 gallons. Tank would be bone dry if I had to add 27.

 

Now just imagine how much you would save with a Yaris on regular gas!!!

I also dont see how your getting just 10 cent difference between 6 octane points but its always location dependence. I see 25 - 30 cent difference depending upon the day of the week, how many rockets were shot in the middle east, the lunar cycle, and when the werewolves come out

 

Holy crap! Either my foot is REDICULOUSLY heavy, or my MINI sucks, because I usually only get ~200miles out of 3/4 tank. Something must be wrong...

I've only been getting about 23 mpg and I don't think I have a heavy foot.

But I've heard that once you are out of the break in period, the mileage improves. I'm at 1400 miles.

(I saw Premium gas for $2.88 today! Better stock up! )

If I only got 23 MPG for premium and 22 MPG for Regular in my "beloved" SUV .... Woot ... that MINI sure would be expensive to drive I'd have to get myself another SUV!!!

 

I'm at 23.7 MPG in my 06 MCS, but only have just under 500 miles. Glad to hear the mileage will go up after the break-in!

I also live in the Land of 10,000 Strip Malls, so my commute to work is full of traffic lights...

 

I paid $2.85 a gallon for premium at a Shell station. Station owner claims to have no methanol/ethanol in it. I get 26-29 mpg with a stock '05 MCS.

 

 

Premium gasoline here in SouthWest Mo. is around 2.98 a gal. I fill up and almost always get 32 to 34 mg. I seem to get better mileage when I'm on a Hwy or Interstate as apposed to "in town" driving. My Mini is fun to drive AND great on mg. The best of both worlds!!

 

We see roughly a 10-15 cent spread from 87-93 around here. I drove an 04 Blazer Xtreme before this and averaged 17mpg. I am averaging 29mpg in my 06 MCS. It sure is nice to spend less on a fillup, using 93, go a lot further per tank, and enjoy the drive much more too. I don't know why everyone isn't driving MINIs, lol.

My mileage got worse after breakin, but I think its the hot weather. (Running AC) I dropped from 32 to 29 mpg, mostly highway.

With the car I sold to buy my MINI, I was at the gas station every few days. It was a 72 El Camino with a 402 cu.in. big block. It averaged 10 mpg on the street and freeway. I only got about 110-120 miles out of a tank. I think my MCS is averaging 26 mpg right now.

But there was nothing like the roar from that engine when you'd fire it up early in the morning and it shattered the silence.

 

There are three gas stations within about a five mile radius that I frequent in northern NJ (Bergen County) and they typically have the lowest prices around the area... Two stations have a distance between them of only about 100 yards. One had Premium for $3.29 and the other had it for $3.19... I got lucky yesterday and found the $3.09 for Shell V*Power (93 Octane). Up here in NY Premium's $3.45. I pretty much get all of my gas in NJ; I'm there every week anyway, it's MUCH cheaper than NY and they pump it for you.
The Jeep mileage sucked. Period.

 

I'm actually losing money, I went from a 01' hyundai accent to my 06' cooper. The average for me in the hyundai was 29-30 mpg, burning 87 octane. The cooper, 30-31 burning the 93. So it might cost me a few dollars per fill up, but the the driving experience is not nearly the same. If you care to factor in auto insurance, I broke even with going from one car to another.

 

How are the insurance rates on mini coopers?

I'm paying ~$150.00 more per YEAR for my MINI vs the Jeep Wrangler. I'll take it. :-)

 

Not very high. It's about on target with other small cars. The difference between the MC and MCS isn't as big as I thought it would be either... I'm in Houston, with some of the highest insurance rates around, and I will be paying $558 for 6 mos. for $250 comp, $500 collision, 50/100/50, 50/25/50 uninsured-underinsured, and rental reimbursement - which is ALOT less than I thought it would be.
