STORIED BRITISH CAR MANUFACTURER COOPER TO BE FEATURED MARQUE AT 33RD ROLEX MONTEREY HISTORIC AUTOMOBILE RACES
Cooper Tribute Part of Larger Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca
MONTEREY, Calif. (August 24, 2005)—Cooper will be the featured marque at the 33rd Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races, August 18-20, 2006, announced Steven J. Earle, president of General Racing Ltd. and founder of the event. Cooper Car Company will be part of a larger celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, featuring the racecars and champions that have competed there.
“With a long and distinguished automotive history, Cooper Car Company left an indelible mark on the racing world. Their design innovations altered the face of Formula One and the Indianapolis 500 and their sedans excelled in Rallying,” said Earle. “It is fitting that the 33rd Rolex Monterey Historic should honor the Cooper legacy, which has included some of the greatest names in racing, such as Sir Stirling Moss, Jack Brabham, Maurice Trintignant and Bruce McLaren.”
As part of its tradition of showcasing and preserving motorsports history, the 33rd Rolex Monterey Historic will not only feature Cooper cars, but will also present Historic IMSA, Can-Am and Trans-Am cars which raced at Laguna Seca, as well as a select group of Historic Formula One cars which reflect a dream of many enthusiasts to see these cars at the track. In total, more than 400 vintage racecars, representing a wide range of automakers, will compete in a series of challenging and highly competitive races.
Founded in 1947 by Charles and John Cooper, the Cooper Car Company started in a small garage in Surrey, England, where the father/son team began building racecars. By the 1950s and 1960s the Cooper Car Company reached its peak as their rear-engine, single seat cars found multiple successes in Formula One events and altered the face of the Indianapolis 500.
Brabham placed sixth in a Cooper Formula 2 car at the 1957 Monaco Grand Prix; Moss won the 1958 Argentine Grand Prix in a Cooper; and in 1959 and 1960, a Cooper won 11 Grand Prix races, with Brabham winning two world championships. Cooper and Brabham shocked the racing establishment at the Indianapolis 500 when they appeared in 1961 with the revolutionary, rear-engine Kimberly-Cooper-Climax. By 1962, every Formula One car on the starting grid had been totally redesigned to follow Cooper’s visionary rear-engine concept.
Perhaps, the Cooper Car Company may be best known for the Mini Cooper. The distinct shape of the Mini Cooper is still recognized today.
The 33rd Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races will be held August 18-20, 2006 at historic Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Car Club Corral
Car clubs are very welcome at the Historics. The special parking corrals are second only to the paddock in the number and quality of exotic and historic cars present over the weekend. Clubs can take advantage of discounted ticket prices for their members, not to mention a special parking area. The corrals allow the clubs to showcase their cars and provide a place to meet and socialize for their members.

To ALL REME Members:
Just thought that I would pass along that I spoke with Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca today. They suggest that everyone purchase their own tickets to the event. This can be done on their website www.laguna-seca.com.
In about a month, a group, individual or club will be selected as the contact point for organizing and arranging the MINI Cooper Corral. We have asked to be notified when and who when they make that designation.
They have told me that there will be ONLY ONE MINI corral. Since there are many MINI clubs and some people will be coming for Saturday/Sunday or Friday/Saturday/Sunday or just Sunday, there will be an issue for distributing parking passes for the MINI corral.
This is the information, as told to me, today from Mazda Raceway. I'll try to keep posting updates as I hear

That's what I was told by Mazda Raceway. I keep seeing other information.
I wish I never posted anything about this event. Me and my BIG mouth.
All I have been trying to do is make this as simple as possible and get all the MINI owners all the correct information.
I have no control over Mazda Raceway, Laguna Seca, Monterrey Historics, or any other MINI club.

All tickets/passes mailed out yesturday except those who were signed up for the Sat NorCal MINI run and/or have made other arrangments with me.
Encluded in the mailing was parking instructions and a list of events for Laguna Seca. I will be sending an e-mail with a list of all the other events I know of in the Monterey area for that weekend.
We are still offering Corral Passes up to and during Monterey Historics.

last-minute lodging, anyone?
UPDATE: I have reservations now, thanks everyone who replied via email! You guys and gals are great!!
This comradery is what owning a MINI is all about!
Is anyone out there making last minute reservations and interested in splitting the cost? I don't snore or smoke and don't mind if you do, at this point just trying to get a room any takers? If you already have reservations but can spare the room for 1 more, I would be very grateful! I will take anything, a bed, a couch, a spot on the floor, or share a camp space to park the MINI, I can sleep in that Please message, IM, Skype, email, or call -- Thanks!

Where to stay
Hello North Cal!
I'm wondering where the after parties will be on Sunday, Aug. 20. We won't be arriving until 10:00 or so, and don't know Monterey. We would like to find a hotel where the late night goers will be. Any suggestions? Thank you.

sumfabgear,
We are having a get-to-gether "dinner" at Bubba Gump Shimp Co. 720 Cannery Row, Monterey. If you think you will be there early enough, contact Rob Saunders at rsaunders68@comcast.net . He is taking names and setting up the reservations. Everyone is welcome, but needs to get in touch with Rob so we have the right numbers reserved. I am sure we will be hanging out for quite a while after dinner.
The MTTS party starts at 7:00AM on Monday at Pirates Cove on the beach.

beach party!
I'd say the REME dinner and MINIUSA beach party will be two of the best highlights for this trip! Wherever hundreds of MINI / Mini owners congregate, there is bound to be one heck of a party! Be sure to look for our black REME shirts, NorCal MINIs, and MOASF people
As for what to do during the day (if you're not at Monterey Historic for some odd reason).. I dunno Monterey that well either, there are some nice MINI / Mini friendly roads though, for example, if you don't live near the Bay Area and haven't ever done any of runs in our neck of the woods, the 17-mile drive is well worth the $5, its a leisurely ride with plenty of well-marked photo ops... but I warn you, this will only leave you wanting more! Next thing you know, you'll be taking part in one of the REME or Nikki BAMMR Point Reyes runs, where the scenery is breathtaking and roads are the fastest twisty fun this side of the Dragon
But I digress.. back to the party at hand

Thanks Everyone!
The 17 mile drive sounds great! I'm not a racer, I'm a Sunday driver, so it will be perfect. I wrote down Rob's email, but I'm sure dinner will be over by the time we get there. I'll keep an eye on this thread, and if there's talk about a night closer we'll meet up with you there. See everyone soon!

Just saw this message from Escape Pod posted on NAM Northern CA:
"Pirates Cove is at 285 Figueroa St, right at the entrance to the Municipal Warf. Turn into the Municipal Warf's main enterance from Del Monte Ave and you'll see the building on the right. It's easy to miss as there is not a big sign out front, just little words painted on the side of the building."
This is where the MTTS Monday AM Beach Party is being held.

For All MINI/Minis signed up with corral passes, there will be MINI/Mini parade laps around Laguna Seca Raceway for both Saturday and Sunday. These are scheduled for 12:25-12:45 on Saturday and 12:10-12:25 on Sunday. Those are scheduled times, subject to change depending on how events & conditions on the track are going. Owners should be with their cars and ready to go 15 minutes ahead of posted times to maximize track time and be prepared for delays if track needs to be cleared from previous race.
