Trying to figure these things out

Me again =\

Bought my 03 MCS a week ago today and have run across a few things it's doing and I'm wondering if they're "normal".

Randomly while sitting at red lights the RPMs will stumble a bit and it will almost feel like it's going to stall but doesn't. Usually does this two or three times and then stops.

Also while idling there's a constant "rattle" sound... probably being paranoid and it's probably normal. Just have the "I bought a used Mini" syndrome is all

Any thoughts?

Hey Buddy Lee. Welcome to the club.

My 03 MCS used to do that almost stall thing when sitting at lights, especially when it was hot out. It went away after a software upgrade, so you might want to hit a dealership and get a reflash.
As for the rattle, there were a number of rattles reported on 03s. The only one I had was in top of the dash. Where does the noise seem to be coming from?

The rattle, if it does it at idle with the clutch out and in neutral, is most likely noise from the throw out bearing. My '02 does the both the things you describe, nothing to worry about.

The rattle you are hearing is normal (according to the dealer). Something to do with tlywheel resonance. If under warranty, and you really don't like the sound, you can get the flywheel replaced, but there is no guarantee that the sound will not return in the future (according to the dealer)

I had the stumble you speak of and even after a software re-flash/upgrade it still happens at times. As Agro says, on hot days, but also after a stretch of 'spirited motoring' and you are stuck in stoplight traffic.

Get the ECU reflashed for the stumble.

Yes I notice it while pulled into my garage (neutral with e-brake on) so I won't worry about that too much now. I'll get it replaced later on, before the warranty expires =P

As for the rattles they're all in the back (I think you all call it "boot rattle"?)

I'll inquire about a software flash when I'm in getting the passenger door window motor replaced on Wednesday

Thanks for the help as usual!
