Burning Smell?

Hi all,

I have a recently acquired 2006 MCS with about 2K miles. I was very careful during the break in period and ever since have only really jumped on it a handful of times.

Question - when I do jump on it and get up around 7-8 rpms I soon smell a noticeable burning odor - is this normal? I'm wondering if it's still breaking in.....or maybe that's just what happens when you're having fun.

Thanks!

Thinking of several things. Are you saying your're winding it up, and dumping the clutch for a standing start kind of thing?

So I'm thinking buring clutch smell.
Supercharger belt slippage.

Anyone else?

??? If your revving your engine to 8krpm, then it's probably dead by now! I think these engines are rev-limited to 7krpm..!

Assuming you mistyped those numbers, all MINI's smoke a bit when they are VERY new, as there is an anti-corrosion film on the exhaust that burns off, but after 2K miles I figured this would be gone.. maybe it isn't. Either way I'd have your dealer look at it just in case.

Cosmoline likely...

or whatever they spray on cars to protect them during the voyage over. The car may have an excess amount of it still under the car. The dealer should remove it if you ask them to. Mineral spirits, I think, will take it off. If left on it turns into a dirty course looking film.

If you mean 7 to 8 RPMs, I doubt your engine is running

If you mean 7K - 8K RPMs, that would be the smell of the pistons burning up

Ooooops

Sorry - brain fart on my part - meant to say 5-6K rpms. The rest is the same - around when I get the SC whine I tend to get the burning smell - but it runs great and doesn't appear to have any problems.

Do you guys think I should get it checked out?

Thanks!

My 06 did the same. I was able to trace it to the exhaust and determined that it was the catalytic converter. A car buddy of mine confirmed it. At 12K the odor is gone.... You should be fine.

My MCS has 23k miles on it and I recently noticed a smell sorta like exhaust/oil mix about 5 to 15 seconds after hard accelleration. Could I have an intake leak at the intercooler boots that only leaks under high boost pressures?
Has anyone else noticed this or is my wife right when she tells me I have an over sensitive nose?
