R50/53 Thanks OctaneGuy
Thanks OctaneGuy
Over the weekend I helped a friend move up to the Bay Area. It turned out to be more of an adventure than we planned.
Friday afternoon while on Interstate 5, about 30 minutes north of the grapevine, the fully loaded U-haul moving van I was driving had a blowout.
Fortunately I got the truck over to the side of the road without incident. The right rear tire was shredded.
Half a dozen calls to Uhaul roadside assistance and customer service later, the sun was going down and we were still on the side of the 5 with no word that anyone from Uhaul was going to be paying us a visit anytime soon to bring out a tire.
Very fortunately for us, when I called Richard (OctaneGuy) about all of this he was able to rework his plans for the evening and drive out to pick us up. Keep in mind this was on Friday evening before fourth of July and traffic getting out of L.A. wasn't light.
When all was said and done, Richard picked us up, we were finally off the side of the 5 after 7 hours of waiting on uhaul, and back in Santa Monica.
The following morning after a few more calls to uhaul the tire was finally fixed around 10 AM. Being a little weary, by that point, we drove up to the truck and then I drove while my friend followed in the car the rest of the way to San Jose (the original plan was to catch a one way flight back to L.A.).
So, a huge thanks are in order to Richard for getting us off the side of the road.
To bring this back to being MINI related... as if I wasn't already convinced of this... I would encourage MCS owners to get a MINI spare-tire and toolkit to carry with them on road trips. The side of the interstate is no place you want to spend multiple hours having an experience you'll remember for a lifetime while you wait for roadside assistance (if you're even in cell phone range).
Thanks again Richard!

I had a similar expierence.
My family had just bought a cabin in the mountains of Colorado. Ok, so we rent a Uhaul truck. No no, not those 19 dollar a day trucks, the biggest one they had. It was MASSIVE! A few movers and some guys spent the entire day loading stuff into this truck. It was JAM PACKED. About 1/2 way to CO, from KS, we noticed that the brakes weren't working too well. When we got to CO springs, just before the mountain roads, the brakes were almost compleatly shot. After 5 hours of waiting for Uhaul roadside assistance, the guy showed up and said the right rear brake drum was cracked. He couldnt repair it, only top off the brake fluid which was leaking. Changing trucks was wayyy out of the question. We made it up, and will never rent from uHaul again. The drum was faulty before we even rented it.
Whew!
