Lotus. Exige. But I don't think she'd like that, either.

if it's going to be your daily car and need back seats, i would
recommend a sedan. coupe's back seats are just a pita to get
in/out even if the front seats slide up electronically like on the
G35C's.

get a civic. roomy, cheap, fun to drive, 40mpg.

hmmm Character...so a British car would fit the bill (Jag, Austin Martin?)

I assume you'd want something that handled on par with the MCS which would rule out the Civic, and most cars with 4 doors.

Have you thought about a later model Classic Mini (late 90s or 2000 model)?

What doesn't she dig?

GTI and Focus SVT are probably closest in looks and size.

Porche parallels in handling but tends to lack the 4 seats, could go BMW, depend upon the model you may find character (or an attempt at styling a $40k BMW to look exactly like a $17k Civic)

I dunno, is she wont go for an Exige dump the girl and keep the MINI

1) He wants character, I think the classic has more and meets the 4 seat requirement
2) The SVT looks better than the GTI and he is trying to please someone else not himself
3) I've mistaken several new 3 series for the Civic and Camry
4) Will remain nonsense until the site guidelines are changed
5) Is guy talk still open/alive?

There seems to be alot of misinformation here. Sorry. Here are the R&T numbers.

VW GTI .87 skidpad 67.2 slalom
Civic SI .87 66.8
MCS JCW .86 66.2

This myth about MINI handling is getting old and the excuse about getting better tires holds for all the cars so its moot.

I wasn't taking about the Si but I was talking about the base model reccomended for its low gas consuption; and though the skidpad #s and slalom #s may be simlar handing goes far beyond that and those who have driven the cars frequently report that the GTI has more power but the MCS will blow them away in the corners. Feedback to the driver and nimblness are part of handling not quantified by R&T.

R&T did say the MCS was better for the track but lets be realistic. The VAST majority of owners do not do track days. In fact, the vast majority of owners don't belong to any forums, could care less about performance, etc. This forums, for example, is a small subset of the universe of MINI owners.

The examples I gave were relevant to this thread. For the vast majority of drivers, they will never know the difference. Remember, I'm talking the majority, not the small numbers of "enthusiasts"

here is the salient point from the article since we really live on the streets (unless you have a pure race car)

"Away from the track, this hyper-reactive personality can be a double-edged sword. While a blast to throw around at anything above about seven-tenths, for more pedestrian everyday use, the Mini's short wheelbase and quick steering can make it a bit darty as a daily driver. Add to that its less-than-supple ride ... and the Cooper S loses Points to the more refined Honda and Volkswagen. Also hurting it are quirky ergonomics and seats that aren't nearly as supportive or comfortable as those of the other two."

Further the GTI had shorter stopping distances and quicker 1/4 mile time yet $2K cheaper, The MINI beat the GTI by 0.4 secs on the track. It would seem to be the current gen is done and MINI really needs to step up to remain competitive and they better do better than 170HP for the next gen or they will be hurting for sales. That is remaining stagnant

Going back to the original thread - what would I get - I would most likely get a TDi version of something VW and have fun driving the heck out of it and converting it to biodiesel. :-) I really really hope that the new MINI (whateverthewagonwillbecalled) will have a direct injection diesel!

i would not be surprised if my 06 civic sedan could keep up with a
MCS through the canyons regardless of going up or down hill
stock vs stock. not that i really care to drive my civic like that.
