How do you tell what model year it is?
Any external traits that set the '02 apart from the '03? I guess if it is Cabrio you know it is either an '05 or '06.
I've always admired those guys that can tell the year of a car simply by looking at it.
Also feel free to supply the punchline

No obvious external features changed between 02 and 03 that would be easily noticeable on a moving MINI.
Noticeable changes occurred between 2004 and 2005 though
Tail lights changed in 2005
Exterior chrome on Cooper changed in 2005
Xenon lights redesigned for 2005

One thing I would look at is the fresh air vent on the upper bonnet. In '03 they had a foam pre-filter. Sometime in '04 those were changed to an all-plastic unit.
Certain colors came and went as well, most nobably Silk Green and Velvet Red.

The '02s and some early '03s have a little swagger to them as well being as how they're 'seasoned' motorcars!
