R50/53 Aero Kit vs. Black Mesh Grill
You can buy just the black mesh for the upper and lower front grilles. I think the total is about $70 for both pieces together. They are listed seperately in the MINI Accessories Catalog
>>is the mesh grill something I can install easily? or should I have the dealer do it?
I remember someone posting that the top mesh (on the bonnet) was really easy to replace, but the bottom section looked like it involved removal of the whole bumper. I don't know if there was ever a followup though...

Hi. I too wanted the same thing. If you go to " can i get the black grille from the aero kit (w/out all the extra stuff)? " you can read about my experiiences with the aero grilles. Here is a pic of what i ended up doing.

Yuo can view a bunch of other pics of my MCS Here.

Just picked up the top and lower black mesh grilles for my MCS yesterday. Total of $120.00, tax included. The top will be no problem. Was told by a MINI technician - If you can gain access to the bottom of the car, you can reach under and unclip the bottom grill. It is held on with a type of pushin plug...Looking at the bottom grill before installation, I don't see any major problems, and without removing the entire lower front of the car.
Will try to get these on either tonight or tomorrow.
Will post results

Majormini:
1) Yes you will have to remove the bumper cover to get at the back of the bumper grill. (#3 torx, 8mm hex and phillips)
2) You will see a big problem... you need to cut that area out of the bumper if you want a good looking flush mount. At best you will have to cut new slots into your bumper cover to hold the upper bumper aero gille on... and it will stick out. Unless you remove that one slat, you will also see it plain as day through the mesh and it really kills the look that you are trying to get.

Thanks for the eyeopener.....Wish I had read your experiance. Never took this in to account when I purchased the grill package. Might have to take my mini to the dealer with the lower grill and see how much they will rip me off by installing the lower grill
just have them do it. the car with everthing is still only under 30 not bad for something like this I am getting tired of people writing that they are getting ripped off at their dealerships If you go to the website see what MSP is on things you go there with the specks you want there is no reason you should be complaining about the prie of things......
