Transporting a Mini to Oahu...best way?

My wife is going to be attending Manoa for grad school starting in the fall, and we both want the Mini to make the trip with us. The only quote I got so far was $2500. It seemed a bit steep, and I was wondering if anyone from the islands would know of a service, or have any leads to a better way of shipping cars to Hawaii. Any help would be greatly appreciated

There are three companies that ship autos between the West Coast and Oahu. They are: Matson, Horizon Lines (formerly SeaLand) and Pasha. They all charged ~$900 a few months ago before the fuel surcharges hit.

Might save some cash or get a "free" trip to the West Coast if you can arrange your own transportation to there.

You can take the Great LA to Honolulu Bridge. There is a bridge built by now ... right?

How about Air cargo, how much is that?

I just shipped my car to Long Beach from Honolulu for $899. Round trip airfare from HNL to LAX on Hawaiian was $314.

Good numbers!

Are you leaving the island for good? I heard you mentioned at the breakfast last month but didn't think would be so soon :-( Hope everything is going good for you. Give me a call when you get a chance, 721-1733.

Ummm...do you need somebody to , like, accompany it. You know, make sure it doesn't get lonely?

I would most emphatically reccomend against using Matson. They not only smashed in the front of my 1971 Mini in less than 1/4 of a mile, but then tried to tell me that it has "soft brakes." I've personally seen the dock monkeys coming off the ship in reverse banging the car off the rev-limiter. Not cool.

I believe Horizon (CSX?) Uses only containerized shipping for the vehicles- nothing left above deck in the elements.

We had a bad experience with Matson too. When shipping our 77 Malibu here we can only guess it was on the bottom of a truck (from florida to ca) and other cars on the top and that the top part was bouncing against the roof of the car. They claimed there was "scratches" and "dents" in the roof before shipping and since we had no pictures (although we know there was no dents in the roof an inch deep) we got screwed on getting the money to fix it.

That sucks. :(

No matter who you ship with, make sure you have many *detailed* shots of your car. That's the only reason Matson payed out to get our Mini fixed... I walked into the insurance guy's little hut - he had his appraisal book open to "Austin America" (nice try), and I plonked down a full CD-ROM of pictures on his desk.

That was something I was thinking about doing, but now I'll make sure I take a couple pics of each body panel, and interior piece
