Tires sizes on 17" S-Lites?

I have an extra set of 17" S-Lites that I want to run with high performance tires for the summer. I don't want runs-flats as they are too stiff. I may do some track time and I don't want to spend gobs of money. (I see some fellow NAM'ers recommend Kumhos. I used to run Dunlops on a 911 for many years, but I'm wide open to trying anything new.) I have also been getting mixed recommendations from local tire shops telling me that I can ONLY run 205-45-17 tires. Of course, they tell me this after they plug my rim size and '06 MCS into their computer. My guess is this might be for liability reasons.

So what I want to know is can I run something wider than a 205, like a 215? And can I get away with a low profile 35 or 40? And oh, what is the proper torque on the lugnuts?

Your input will be GREATLY appreciated!

I am running BFG g-force KDWs 215/40/17 on my S-Lites with no problem. I got them from Tire Rack for $107.

I was wondering similar things when I was shopping for wheel/tire packages and found a good answer here
