Do centering rings have to fit perfectly?

I'm a new to the aftermarket wheel shopping thing, but have read lots of posts and done some online research. It seems most people recommend centering rings, so my question is do they have to fit perfectly down to the tenth or 5/100th mm? Can either or both the internal and external diameter be slightly off? I ask because I'm checking for the availability of centering rings before I purchase and it seems a number of the wheels and available rings are slightly off, for example 73.1 mm centerbore wheel and the ring is 73 OD/56.15 ID.

Any advice appreciated . My apologies if this seems a silly question to the more knowledgeable folk here.

You could actually run the wheels w/o center rings for a short period. They are there to make sure the wheel is centered on the hub. The bolts also do a fairly reasonable job of this as long as they are torqued correctly.

Hey There,

that's a NO, NO,

You should not run wheels without hubcentric rings,
there is a lot of vibration and possible damage to both the wheels, hubs and studs.

If the vendor you are purchasing wheels from can not provide you with the proper rings, run away and find a serious one.

I was just letting him know that he could drive to a shop and have them installed.

And yes, the vender should supply the correct ones.

actually these wheels are lug centric by design (I feel like im repeating myself ever 6-7months).
they do not require centering rings, but recommended for aiding proper alignment when installing
onto the hub.

ive personally run wheels in the past that did not use centering rings
nor were they hubcentric. no vibration, no issues. i prefer centering
rings for ease of installation.

Thanks all
...went back and searched threads about lugcentric vs. hubcentric and now I realize that I didn't clearly understand that before. As I said before, sorry to those who have more knowledge and experience.
