Can I put a mattress on top of MINITOR?

Picking up a full size memory foam mattress tonight (no box springs). Is it safe to tie on top of my MCS (have sunroof, FYI). It is either that or my wife's Prelude but the MINI has a much bigger/flatter roof. I can keep it down below 45mph, is this a real bad idea or OK? I do remember the no couches on top of MINIs thread, but this is way lighter. And I believe the memory foam mattress is lighter than a normal mattress but I could be wrong.

Besides the scratching problems ...

Lighter means "sail" and in you got one huge potential sail up there. I would never do it. As said before, get a friend with a pickup. This is one of the limitations of a itsy bitsy car

I was reading through the brochure yesterday, and I believe the max roof load was something like 175 pounds. So, maybe that sofa wasn't such a crazy idea? Naw, still crazy, but a mattress seems more reasonable. Secure it well though... you'd hate to hit the brakes and have it on your bonnet, or just have it go flying off and be a danger to public... but that's obvious.

Will make for a good picture.

Don't underestimate how much lift it will get riding on top. I was following a SUV with plywood sheets tied down to the roof and at about 40 mph the plywood flew up into the air. It flew up probab;y 30 feet. I watched it go up, and just as I was thinking, "wow, look at that, it is kinda cool"; the "oh, s***, it is going to come down right on top of me" sunk in. I was able to swirve around it. I know a matress is not exactly the same thing, but as air gets under the matress it will pull on the rope much harder than you can imagine.

Get the right tool for the job...

and a Mini aint it!

What does delivery cost? What does a one day rental of a pick-up cost? Do you have any friends that have a better car/truck to help?

Matt

ps, it's not about wieght, it's about drag and lift.

That reminds me of something that happened in my neighborhood when I was a kid. There were a couple of brothers (teenagers IIRC) that lived near me that were kinda crazy. They needed to haul some plywood a few miles, so they had the bright idea to just put it on top of their truck and have one brother lay down on top of the plywood to weight it down so it wouldn't fly off. I'm not sure how fast the brother driving got up to, but the brother on top and the plywood got airborn. He said he was about level with the powerlines before he plummeted to earth. He was battered, bruised, and quite shaken up, but he survived.

Around here you can rent a truck or full sized van (not from a Uhaul type place) for $20 for the day. Much better idea than risking doing the same on your Mini IMO.

So hypothetically if I were to go against all of your good advice, how slow do you think I would have to drive to minimize risk? 25mph? Less?

Not saying I'm doing it, looking for a truck but not sure I can find one at such short notice and have to get it tonight.

If you don't take pics, I'll fly down to Texas and kill your MINI, then steal your matress.

If your going to do it, I would also suggest keeping it under 30mph, and I would also have someone behind you just incase something happens. Better to have two people with two cars going rather than one person/one car.

Like I said, but two cars? Double the destruction?

I say do it. Just be SOO SO SO careful not to put too much pressure on the roof, between the sunroof, and the windows. It dents VERY eaisly. But, I think that putting a mattress would be fine.

No, the second car would prevent further damage to other cars on the road if it were to fall off, or if he needs extra help loading/unloading it.

I say don't do it! The Minitor is much too nice a car to have a mattress on top. You don't know anyone with a truck, a mini van, an SUV? Hm... who needs a mattress anyway?

Its so touching to know that you were all so concerned.

Yes, silly me had to push my luck but all went well. I tied it down like the boy scouts tie down xmas tries, which really is the key to prevent the planing. I bundled it around the car, but also secured it in back to the cargo hooks in the boot and in the front to the tow hook and the strut tower bar. Actually this was the first time that the strut tower has been functional besides just being shiny. I think the real key was that it was memory foam which could be easily secured because it is so squishy. I would do it again, but only with memory foam, never with a slippery standard mattress. And also never in a MINI WITHOUT a sunroof as my 02 MC had an uneven roof because it had been pushed in a little from something on top of it (like a mattress?) I wasnt scared of this this time around because I knew that the sunroof would provide better support. Thanks for all the advice even if I didnt take most of it. It did suck going 30mph in a 60mph for a few miles.

And no, I didnt get any pics. Sorry. I was too stressed out and trying not to cause disaster to remember the camera. I do like my new bed though.

Thanks...I think.

Maybe I should take the mattess back outside and throw it on top and tie it down just for pics to make you guys happy. And so Polizei doesnt come down to Texas and kill my MINI and steal my mattress as he so oddly threatened. Good thing I am in Seattle and he wont find me in Texas.

Man, I would never do it. I would perform sexual favors in a back alley for a truck rather than use a lovely MINI.

I was going to add that UHaul rents pickups for $20, a small amount for piece of mind!!
