Wide wheels

The first time I saw the Hamann wheels I have wanted that look for my MINI. Now that their is talk about the "euro" look, I saw that silver car with 17x8 on the front and 17x9 on the rear. Pictures can be seen here https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...&postcount=267
or here https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...&postcount=268

I am not looking to go with different sizes, but would the 17x8 fit front and rear with a 35et and a 215/40 tire? I was thinknig about using a space in the rear if needed to help the "look" or at least get it to fill the wheelwell. Wheels can be found here.http://tmtuning.com/wheels/wh_104.html

I am not lowered yet, and if i do it will be h-sports or m7s as I do not track the car, just spirited around town driving at this point. Thanks

17x8s would definitely not be plug & play. I'm running 225/45/16s on 16x7.5 SSR comps and I had to clearance the inside of the fender liner in the rear because the wheel (not the tire) was rubbing on the inside. After 3mm spacers, I still have a little rubbing when I hit a decent size bump, but now I believe it's on the outside and think it's the tire.

EDIT - forgot to mention that I'm lowered with PSS9s. It's certainly easier to make everything fit with stock suspension.

I have Hamann 17x8s front and rear with 215/45s and alta springs. Yes, they rub. Spacers will only make the matter worse because the problem is that there is not enough of an offset, not too much. If anything, machining off a little from the inside of the wheel to create a larger offset would be better. But that would probably create safety issues! The rubbing is not too bad and I would venture to guess that 205/45s or 215/40s would be OK, even with a mildly lowered car.

I am thinking about 18X7.5 or 18X8's. I think you would have to go to 35 series tire. 2perCooper is running 18X8's on stock shocks and lowering springs w/o any issues.

Post some pix if you do it.....

205 45's are still an inch taller than 40's so i would go w/tha 205 40 to make sure it all werks out.
there will only be a small rubbin' issue if ur runnin' ur MINI real low

Dunno about pure&simples response...his offset must be higher...im runnin 7.5x17 with H&R springs and so on with no rubbing on inside...
and ummm...there wont be any rubbing on the inside of the rim with 8x17 et35 all around(and thats with suspension mods)...and then as joker said 205/40...that is the exact setup that I almost bought...but I decided for now to keep my rg-II's..if we keep talking about the keskins im going to break down and get them!!! stop it!! lol

I have the 17 /8 Hamman wheels with Leda Coil overs dropped about 1.5 inches. I use a 45 series tire as a rule and currently have BGF KDW-2 in a 215/45 - 17 size. I have no rubbing issues except perhaps something like a rail road crossing . I have had the wheels on for about 50,000 miles so far and have never had any premature tire damage do to body contact. Hope this helps with the discussion.

Offset is not a measurement that you solely want to go by when going with different width wheels. A 45 offset on a 7" wheel is not the same clearance as a 45 on a 9" wheel. When changing widths you need to look at the backset, not offset.

I think he meant back space, which is the distance from the hub mounting face to the inboard rim edge. A 17x8 wheel, with Zero offset would typically have a back space of 4.5" for most Aluminum wheels. That same wheel with a +25.4mm offset would have a back space of 5.5". Rim edge thickness does vary, my ce28n's are .5" but my SSR's are apx. .375". A 17x6 wheel with a .5" rim edge and a +25.4mm offset would have a back space of 4.5".

Looks like I am going to need to be in contact with the wheel manufacture before I purchase them, to get some numbers.

I thought after Stats in college I would be done with math..

Only reason i know back spacing is from my experiance with jeeps. I also knew offset and back spacing worked together, I just wasnt sure how.

You can usually ignore the rim edge thickness in figuring, what will fit, unless you know there is a good chance the WHEEL edge might be in contact with something, like the strut or trailing arm. Just figure something like, 17x7, +48 to 17x8, +42. The difference in backspace is, .5" (half the increase in rim width) -6mm (the negative change in offset) or 6.7mm. Tires are usually the clearance problem with the exception of big brakes. Typical wheel limits are 15x7.5, +40 (rear trailing arm) and 16x8, +42 (front strut and only apx. 2 extra mm on the rear arm) 17x8 should have the same limit in front and a few more mm in rear due to curve of trailing arm.

Mounted tire width varies in a given size from model to model, check manufactures' specs, note Measureing Rim Width and add or subtract .2" for every .5" change in rim width. (good rule of thumb and in most specs) This is most important if there is a danger of the tire side wall being in contact with the strut or fender. This has very little effect on tread width.
