I was on the highway this morning in steptronic mode on my CVT. I was in 6th gear, however I noticed that while in sixth gear and at about 90 mph, the rpms seem to be sitting at 4, so I gave it some more gas. What I noticed is, that whenever I did this, the gear would automatically switch back down to 4th even though I was still at 90mph! Then I would have to "kick" it back up two, to sixth gear. I tried this a few times, and every time the same thing.... 90mph, at 4 rpms, then when I put the pedal into full throttle and the rpms went over 4 it would kick it down to 4th gear. I did notice though, that by doing this and making me kick it back up two into sixth gear, that it gave the car an extra "jolt" of power. Is this normal? Is this what the car is doing, kinda like when you downshift then upshift quickly again on a manual? Or is something just wrong? Thanks.

 

Sounds like a simulation of kickdown in traditional auto transmissions - but you might expect all that stuff to be disabled when you "take over" and switch to steptronic?
