Murphy’s Law

So, my 2003 has just a hair over 10,000 miles. I went away for 2 weeks on vacation and when I got back, of course the discs were rusty. No problem. Just drive a few miles and it’ll clear up right? Wrong. The brakes wouldn’t stop grinding and pulsating.

I went to MINI Peabody this morning and they found the rotors were delaminating and coming apart and also that the brake pads were cracking. I had to have all brake rotors and pads replaced. Better yet, my service warranty ran out last month. MINI Peabody was quite nice though and they split the cost with me due to that issue. Needless to say, I’m pretty mad that the brakes had to be replaced at only 10,000 miles. Not a good sign.

Did you really let them replace the rotors? Did you attempt to get a second opinion, first? Did you make sure to get your used parts back!?
Delaminating 3-year-old rotors???? I can understand delamination of pads, but a delaminated rotor at that age would suggest a manufacturing defect, most likely a casting defect. mileage wear at 10k miles isn't significant enough to be an issue.

Everything was replaced. I usually do all my own work (my father has a lift at his house), so they didn't pull the wool over my eyes. Possibly because the car only had 3000 miles put on in the first 3 years, this affected the brakes. Considering I was so close to my service warranty, I might call MINI and request they pay as it seems that this was a defect (as you mentioned), considering the low mileage. I was glad the dealer paid half ($350), but it still hurt my wallet! Cuts into the new wheels and tires I'm ordering today!
