Has anyone here own or.....
Yes, I have.
GTi - more of a GT car as compared to the MCS. Quieter a bit more plush, but heavier and bigger. If I had both sitting in my garage and had to make a 6 hour trip somewhere, I would take the GTi. DSG is great if you like that sort of thing.
MCS - more sports car. More visceral with a touch more nvh. Much smaller and lighter and changes direction lots quicker than the GTi.
There were a post or two written up on this comparo a while back. A search should uncover it.

ScuderiaMini just bought one, traded his MINI for it.

I sat in one at the DC Autoshow. Haven't driven it, but I did drive an A3, which should be nearly identical, but with a bit more interior gizmos.
The DSG was really nice. The car was smooth, and quiet.
The MINI is much more in touch with the road, but I can agree mg5904 about probably taking the GTI/A3 on a long trip instead of the MINI.

MCS and GTI are pretty close in performance department. I do not feel like it's heavier than MCS at all. If you look at the spes on the paper...yes MCS is lighter, but on the street you won't feel any different because GTI has more torque to make up for additional weight. DSG is as good as it could be, but the manual transmittion is also upgraded from the last generation. Rolling the gears from 1-6 is smooth like butter.
JCWMCS is stil the fun car to have!

I feel pity for anyone buying a VW. Even if the MKIV performs well, its destined to break down.

I shopped for a 2nd car in January to supplement the MCS. The GTI was just hitting the dealers then, it's a great package if you want most of the MINI fun factor but need a bit more room and luxury. I didn't really consider because I thought it was too close to my MCS. I did test drive the MKV Jetta GLI before ending up with an Audi A3 2.0 with manual. I liked the overal size and package of the A3, nicer interior, more room, and free service like the MINI. Drove a couple of 3.2 A3's with DSG and it's just not my bag.

GTI 3170 lbs
MCS JCW 2620 ibs
0-60: 6.3 seconds both JCW and GTI
1/4 mile: 14.8 GTI vs. 14.9 JCW
Hp is nothing without torque
.
BTW, comparison is based on JCW, not a regular S.
More I drive my GTI, more I love it.
