AWD Mini?

Hi all,
Is there any word on the Mini going AWD in the future?
AWD seems to be the new trend - everybody thinks they need one!
I own a BMW '91 325iX and absolutely love the car both in normal driving conditions and in inclement weather.
I ordered my '06 Cooper S with the optional LS diff. but would absolutely trade it for a possible AWD Mini - I would still keep the iX, though!
Hopefully, they'll consider it and, dress it with a similar design as in the ix - LS rear/center diff. and open front diff. with RWD bias for a more neutral feel/handling.

I think it's a great idea! It would be a nice way to expand the MINI product line, especially for those motorists in the snowy North and Northeast, or those who want a wicked off-road rally car! Pike's Peak, baby!

MINI USA, if you're listening, I vote Heck Yeah!

I have to say that it really needs to be done. Everytime i start from a stop, the DSC engages. It does most of the time.

MINI is so well balanced, it is an overkill having an AWD version.

If they ever make one, I'll take 2, one for the wife and one for me.

I test drove the new iX last week on a track course, they had 9 vehicles for us to compare and 2 were Lexus and one Audi, the others were BMW of different models, I was amazed at the new iX system, 60/40 is the default but can go to 0/100 in 0.01 sec. and back depending on traction, that system is amazing and those of you who don't care about it is because you don't live where the roads are covered with ice for 6 months and should be optional like most other manufacturer so you wouldn't have to pay for something you don't want.
My wife has a Z28 for summer and a Jimmy for winter, that would cut on one vehicle, I would sell my Envoy, one more gone, plus the insurance saving, so bring me an all wheel drive MINI and I'll save a lot of money and won't have so many cars in my garage.

wow! with a possible AWD mini, and the new turbo engines, seems like MINI might be trying to get into the WRC!!! We'll have to see, but if they do, SPEED better start giving WRC better coverage, instead of NASCAR. dont know about you guys, but Im never up at 2 am to see a 5 min recap of the WRC every 10th sunday of every other year.

the only one that was made by getrag has been crushed....but they have the plans in the event it's needed

the mini is tight, true, BUT, if it had AWD, itd handle a lot better if it had lots more power as opposed to only FWD. With a rear bias, this thing would be amazing. not that im not happy with what i have now, i jus tthink that if it a tuner tuned it up to like 300 hp, it would do so much better with awd.

Dang AWD would be it. My only complaint with my mini is that the back tires dont spin.

I'll take two AWDs thanks.

I get crazy at the mere thought of an AWD Mini. It would be my dream car.....

I live up north...and the only other thing that comes close is the WRX STi....but I'd much prefer a Cooper S with AWD!

60/40 weight distribution is NOT "balanced."

All wheel drive would help balance, not hurt it (whether or not it would be faster is debatable).

If MINI comes out w/ an awd option for the 07 model or any future models I'll be seriously pissed

yeah, if MINI does introduce an AWD model, the power is going to need to be seriously upgraded if they want to overcome drivetrain loss. Is there any room under there for another axle and a driveshaft? hopefully interior space wouldnt be compromised. Great to fantisize about for sure!

I agree... I don't want the added cost, complexity and weight of AWD.
What we need is RWD!

But if they were to go with RWD then you could losse control quicker. The wheel base is soo small, counter steering is not an option. I think the best thing for them to build, would be the AWD MCS. I think they would sell out of those in the first week about talking about it... That would be a mean little bastard.... Put me inline for one of those if they come out... L8r Spike

Nope... RWD will balance the car out.. putting some weight on the rear and lightening the front.. would be easy to get close to a 50/50 weight distribution. Look at the miata which has a shorter WB than the mini... its RWD..
Nothing like steering with your right foot... no plowing, etc....

I won't believe this for a second until I see some evidence of this "test."

Usually, all wheel drive hurts 0 to 60 because some wheelspin is an advantage at the drag strip (and also because of the weight thing).
