Weighing the Mini

I have been wondering how much my Mini weighs for some time now. Well today I found out. I went back to Edge Motorsports in Dublin and they put it up on the corner scales and we got the numbers.

I had them do an alignment a couple a weeks ago and that really helped to get it more planted. Eric told me that the scales would be ready soon and that I should come back if I wanted to get it weighed.

It is an 03 MCS with Sports Package and has 16" R84's. It had a 1/2 tank of gas and about 15lbs of my personal junk in it. The first numbers are for the empty Mini and the second are with me in it.

2753
864 802
506 581

2913
920 823
573 597

Okay Mr. Smarty the reason I posted both numbers was not so you could do the math to get my weight. It was to show how the weight gets distributed. The real question I have is how much should my passenger weigh and where should she sit?

According to my calculations, in order to get the perfect 50/50 weight distribution, your passenger should sit in the back seat and weigh 843 lbs.

All kidding aside, thanks for posting these numbers. They are very interesting.

With the light weight of the rear end, it makes me wonder why the there's not more over steer in the Mini.

I am afraid that if my passenger sees these numbers she is going to take the drivers seat and put me in the back.

This kind of bias is what I was concerned with and why I had the car weighed before doing anything. I think that balance is more important than total weight savings.

These numbers show that taking out the back seat doesn't help with front to rear weight bias and doing the one ball exhaust doesn't help with side to side or front to rear.

I am not planning to get ride height adjustable suspension for my Mini, so I will probably just leave it. If it were a track car I would strip it and go that route though.

Yes they have the scale system and they can do corner balancing. Of course the car must have suspension with ride height adjustment or at least spring preload adjustment so that they can change the orientation.

I was hoping to take some weight out or move it around but that doesn't look so doable given the large weight bias and the poor placement of parts that might be moved or removed. But at least if I did move things they could show the results with their scales.

Edge also has a nice alignment system and a wheel balancer. I had them do an alignment and now my tires feel more planted and the turn in is much better. I would need camber plates and adjustable control arms to optimize the settings, but at least now I have the stock specs properly dialed.

I found the answer.

Just buy one of these and fill it with bricks, or beer.
