R50/53 MC vs. MCS
MC vs. MCS
Just something I noticed on the freeway today. I passed by 2 MC's and 1 MCS.
Okay both MC's didn't wave (watever no big deal) but then one of em cut me off and did not signal!
The MCS waved as they passed me by (I tend to slow down to wave)...
Anyways, the point... my theory is that more (key word more) MCS drivers wave than MC drivers. Thoughts?

yea because they TRULY love their cars, thats why they got the 'S,' to experience the passion of motoring...
...
No offense to the people who got the cooper on here, because just by being on this site it shows how much you love your car..
But I would be willing to bet there are a lot more 'S' owners than Cooper owners on here...am I right?
I am a proud 'S' owner.

My theory is that more (not all) MC owners bought their MINI because it is economical to drive and own (a car is just a mode of transportation, hence they do not notice cars in general). MCS owners bought their MINI because of the performance and drive (a car is more to them then transportation, it is part of their persona). There tends to be more MCS owners in the MINI club, because they are more into the car.
This thread is going to get ugly fast, so I thought I'd pile on:
From what I've seen, MCS owners have a greater stake in the car (financially and emotionally), so they tend to be more fanatical. Not saying MC owners aren't fanatics, just that a higher percentage of MCS owners are. For example, I frequently see an MCS customized in some way -- wheels, graphics, tint, etc. but most MCs I see are bone stock. Nothing wrong with that; just making an observation.

My personal take on this, typical MC drivers more into driving their cars than showing/talking about/modding their cars. MCS drivers are opposite. Therefore, MCS drivers are more likely to be on the lookout for others to share their "culture", to them MINI's are part of their lifestyle, whereas MC drivers are just ... well, into driving.
And it's wrong to assume most MC owners got the MC for basic transportation. Because the MC is "underpowered", it requires more "driving" than an MCS, and that creates fun and excitement in its own right.
I'm sure everybody have heard of the saying "it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than to drive a fast car slow."

What if you want one of each? I really do want a Cooper to go with the S. Best of both worlds and all that, eh?
Of course, they would both have to be BRG, 'cause that's the best color

Got one of each. An MCc and a MCS JCW (taking delivery of it tomorrow).
And the JCW is a BRG, but I still think the LY MCc is more fun.

Weird, I never thought about it before but of the few I've had who wave/wave back they have all been MCSs! Strange, I'm not gonna speculate as to the reason but I just never thought about it before. Both cars are soooo common around here that barely anyone recognizes the Mini community thing anyway though :(
(Note on Minis taking over here - last week when I was in Marin I noticed a distinct explosion in Minis there as compared to before as well. I've been speculating that stinky Sonnen BMW will be allowed to be a dealer soon..)

Wow....basing that theory on a sample size of 3....nice....
I could easily say the opposite which in my case is true....
I drive the same stretch of road about 10 miles between home and work every day, I see the same 2 or 3 MCS most days , none of them have ever waved to me ( I used to wave to them but got tired of being hung out to dry)
However, there is one other MC I see every day and we wave and grin to each other like idiots every time we pass...
Suppose I could enter the opposite hypothesis to yours.
How do MCS owners have a greater financial stake? I'm pretty sure a fully loaded MC is more than a stripped MCS... and an MCc is more than a modestly-appointed MCS.
A person who buys aforementioned fully-loaded MC is probably not doing so because they are looking to be economical, and a person buying a fully-loaded MCS probably isn't doing so because they're super into performance, as many options add weight and fuss.
Wait... what was that sound?
Yep. Unmistakable: The sound of silly theories shattering.
Seriously, guys: can't we get over the MCS = performance, MC = econobox thing? Please?

See "apples to apples comparison" on your favorite dictionary website. It might help.
Now, if you can show people *tend to* (ding ding) load up their MC, while MCS owners *tend to* buy them stripped, I'll bend on my theory. Until then, I'm going with the *average* MCS owner -- meaning those you're likely to pass on the street and wave to as equally as any other -- has more money invested in their car. I'm sticking with that. I like the truthiness of it.
So... your theory -- dependant upon averages that you mystically feel are accurate and for which you yourself have no proof* -- will stand until my points can be proven?
You needn't be so condescending, either. I am -- gasp -- perfectly capable of reason. It's just that you haven't really shown me any.
* by which I mean the assumptions about purchase and not the purchase price.

Well of course im not putting down any type of MINI.. I'd really love to have both
... Drive the MC as communte and take out the MCS on weekends, but since I had to choose I went with the MCS.
It was just an observation about the MC and MCS cars on the road (I commute every day.. so things get mundane). But I love both cars and hopefully will have enough cash to get the other one later.

You need to let go this MC is a commuter attitude. I am sure you are not doing it on purpose, but you are comming of very negative. I've had plenty a MCS owner refer to my car as cute and change their minds soon after. And with my mods and a lead foot 22 mpg average hardly makes for a commuter. In either case, if a person is a stick in the mud it hardly has anything to do with his car.
Motor on!
Motor on!
I very rarely see a Cooper. Most of the MINIs in the Chattanooga area are Cooper S's. We had a meeting of the Scenic City MINIs and we had 5 MCS's, 2 MCSa, 1 MCS/JCW, 2 MCSC's, and 1 Classic Mini show up. (The couple with the classic also had a MCS). Another funny thing, EVERY ONE of these cars had some kind of mod. Some were pretty extensive, some were maybe just aftermarket stripes; but ALL had at least one mod!
Does this mean:
1. MINI owners in the Chattanooga area prefer supercharger whine, more horsepower, etc OR
2. MINI owners that are over 100 miles from the nearest dealer tend to get the "S" and people with MINI dealerships nearby are more likely to have a broader mix of tastes. Whenever I visit Atlanta, I tend to see as many non-S as I do "S" OR
3. Correlation doesn't mean causality. It's just a pure fluke that there are far more "S" owners active in Scenic City MINI's

I will let you all keep you MCS biased opinions and will see you on the road.
