Sounds.....AMAZING!!!!

Ok I was just on the JCW site that you can get to from miniusa.com. There are sound clips from inside and outside a JCW car. Is the supercharger whine that much louder on a JCW? for those of you that want to hear the clip click on the interior audio clip.

I love that sound.

Please, those of you that have JCW or that have been in one...let me know....that SC is FAR louder than my stock S.

It's louder on the JCW than a stock MCS, but an Alta air cleaner is even louder still.

It almost sounds like an aircraft engine whine. LOVE it.

So what makes the supercharger whine louder? Intake? More holes in the firewall? Take away it's candy?

If you put the alta on its louder then stock because it doesnt have a lid on top of the box. Also you take out part of the wall right there to increase air flow to it. When the stock Air box has the lid and has that wall still in place. And the JCW intake, has a flap that opens up at 4,500rpm. Even then its still not as loud as the alta.

since that beautiful whine is made from the blades of the SC cutting through the air, the fewer obstructions you put between the soundwaves and your ears will make the loudest whine.

which is why the Alta intake is a lot louder then stock, because you only have a filter and a tube (and the body) between your ear and the SC. whereas with the stock you have a firewall, an enclosed filter, etc...

The JCW CAI is designed to sing at 4500 up on purpose. Below that, its not much louder at all.

BTW, the JCW exhuast sounds on that clip are VERY deceiving. Its QUIETER than stock, as others have pointed out.

Doesn't seem quieter then stock did at all, esp now that its broken in. Just this morning the SO left early for work and I could hear the car driving away in spite of the double pane windows - had a great tone, nice and deep. Its certainly not the loudest and the sound is discrete and sporty vs super loud 'I need attention' volumes, but we have had people remark on the sound, so it can't be all that quiet. Maybe you just can't hear those deeper tones very well

That could be

In all seriousness, when I first heard the JCW sound clip I thought "wow" thats sounds like a serious exhaust. Once I had the car, I thought "huh"? Look at those two huge cans hanging back there.

Go over to the JCW site and listen to MIke Cooper talking about his design goals which were to have a "refined" exhaust, quiet but still putting out the HP. That is exactly what it is.

To be honest, we have come over the years from various supersprint exhausts on sports cars and this was just way to quiet. There is one post on MINI2 where someone dynod the Borla vs JCW and the Borla got only 2 HP more than the JCW so it is a good (albeit expensive) exhaust. It just doesnt have the gutteral sound we were used to.

My test, is the house test. I used to be able to hear the wife coming down the street before the driveway. With the JCW, she was in the house before I knew she was home. Some ppl say the JCW does sound better for the side of the road at speed. Dunno. Just my opinion. The wife was very disappointed in that exhaust.

IMO, it all depends upon where you come from and what your used to

I think that is the issue, what you are used to/coming from. Stating that it is quieter then stock, though, is not nec accurate. Honestly, perhaps it is the pitch for you since I can hear the car coming home from a good distance - even go down and open the garage in advance sometimes

Re; the intake - I've got the JCW and love the change in character at 4500, it's like the car saying (loudly) you're on it now and its time to move I know the others are louder at lower revs, etc since they are open all of the time and have less insulating, and I've had that before - it can be fun, but I've found the Jekyll and Hyde nature really enjoyable: relatively quiet inside in stop and go, then the audible switchover to serious intent is cool

okay I played it then went for a drive, the JCW sound clip I found in the JCW webpage also had the JCW exhaust on the car the interior sounds almost like the stock exhaust with an ALTA CAI with a few thousand mile on it, but a little louder burble IMO, so if they removed those foam inserts and put the sound guy in the back seat I can definately seeing it being that loud, also big variable here just how loud were your speakers?

lol, I'm not going to look through all that, but by the looks of it it is pretty subjective and doesn't even have info like miles on the exhaust to determine if its broken in yet. On top of that, from the dates its not on an 05 MCS much less an MCSa. (Fwiw, I am basing my impression that it is not quieter then stock on this car stock as well as the 03 we had, and the JCW exhaust has a coupla-few thousand miles on it.)

Like I said, I did not read through all that but it did not look convincing of the absolute statement to moi

PS: I'll bet that crowd is likely made themselves hearing impared anyway and may suffer from an inability to hear low tones as well

Here ya go:

"dB at 3k RPM, Peak dB during WOT to 6k RPM"

Stock Cooper S: 80/96

JCW: 83/91 - Quieter than stock, the JCW was a surprise at how silent it was. One attendee even asked if we’d run the car yet!"

Yes, 04 Dragon. Yes, its all relative. I think they did have sound equipment tho!.

Yes, but was it broken in? What years are the comparison cars, mileage etc? What is determined as loud; it is a deeper tone, so is 'loud' higher pitched? IMHO that is not an absolute determination, esp as it it is clear how it sounds in actual usage on our 05 (I do not know if a car being driven might also sound diff then on a dyno and other acoustic issues and how other equipment like CAIs on the cars might also have an effect).
