Normal Mileage?

Purchased 2006 Mini S Convertible 10/31/05. Wife is primary driver (darn). Stop and go suburban driving is getting us an average of 23 mpg. When I drive it on the highway, I get about 28. Seems low. Comments?

That is really about average. If you are still all stock try changing to a better airfilter. Happy motoring.

If you were expecting great mileage you bought the wrong car. The MC is the mileage champ. (Low to mid 30's mixed driving). Sorry.

33.1 MPG Cooper (not S) Convertible Manual

3 months of driving, mixed city and highway. I get about 37-38 mpg driving 70 mph on highway trips.

I barely break 20 mpg with my MCS in all-city driving -- short trips with a cold engine. I get close to 30 mpg on long highway trips, if I keep it under 70 mph in 6th gear.

I've read on these boards that mileage improves with age. Some claim it's the engine breaking in, others claim it's the computer adjusting to your driving style.

Shifting up to keep the engine close to 2000 rpm ought to help.

Thanks for the feedback. A related question:

We have an automatic (I know, I know...but the wife can't drive a stick). Anyway, I've noticed that the tranny seems to hang in 3rd or 4th gear (at around 3000 rpm) if I accelerate moderately from a stop to about 45 mph. Seems like the tranny is waiting for the car to go faster before it upshifts, and I have to "force" it to upshift by increasing my speed or using the "paddles". Has anyone else had this experience?

Sounds about right with the shifting, or at least that is where mine hangs up. That is what the paddles are for though!

I guess I got lucky or something. I have a JCW and I get an average of 28-29 mpg. I drive alot on the highway, but if I am on a trip and go through an entire tank on the interstate, I can get 33 mpg. I remember 1 tank where we calculated an avg mpg of 34. I have gotten as low a 7mpg but that was on the track
