Alta's twincharger 'TWURBO' kit offers Mini Cooper S owners a buddy to complement to their supercharger; the Garrett GT3071R turbocharger. The Alta Mini Performance Twin-Charged Turbo kit for the Mini Cooper S features a Garrett GT3071R turbo capable of producing up to 400 horsepower! Mounted low in the engine bay, the turbocharger has plenty of clearance at the firewall and does not interfere with any underhood components. The kit includes a 304 stainless steel tubular header and downpipe. The downpipe scales begins at 2.5" behind the turbo, scales up to 3", and the scales back down to 2.5" to meet a stock exhaust or any other direct replacement system. A 5-layer silicone intake hose and foam filter feed the turbocharger. The 3" silicone intake delivers air smoothly, gradually scaling up to meet the huge 4" turbo housing inlet. The system includes polished aluminium pressure pipes with an attached Alta vent-to-atmosphere blow-off valve to relieve strain on the turbo and throttlebody during shifts; while also letting everyone know you have a turbo.


Alta includes a 5% larger supercharger pulley in the kit to reduce the supercharger boost output. By pushing more boost through the turbo and less through the supercharger, the kit increases in efficiency and produces more power reliably. The basic kit consists of everything needed to bolt the turbo to the car and allow it to run 16psi; a GT3071R ball-bearing turbo, polished stainless steel manifold , downpipe, oil and coolant lines, fittings, pressure pipes, silicone intake hose, foam air filter, air box, fresh air pipe,blow-off valve, and all couplers, clamps, nuts, and bolts.

Alta's kit is designed for use the stock ECU and fuel injectors. The low boost setting is about the same as a 17% pulley an ECU unnecessary, but suggested. A fuel computer such as the Turbo XS D-Tec or the Apexi SAFC are both simple options for fine-tuning your fueling. For those looking to take things further, Hydra EMS and Alta have developed a Standalone Engine Management system designed for use with this kit. For tuners with the Hydra EMS and larger 550cc Alta injectors, pre-tuned maps tuned to higher boost levels for increased performance will be available.

With the base kit on the stock ECU, your factory internals will be up to the task of powering your twin-charged mill. However, if you choose to go the Hydra EMS route and increase boost pressures, you should consider pistons and rods for increased reliability and performance. Alta has various injector options for those pushing the kit beyond base levels; you can send your stock units in to be modified to flow 550cc, or you can purchase new stock injectors that are pre-modified from Alta to reduce vehicle downtime.

The factory intercooler is adequate for the base kit, we recommend upgrading it however, for increased performance. With any increased boost or tuning, a larger intercooler is a must.

All that being said, this is an excellent way to boost the performance of your Mini Cooper S safely and reliably. The Alta Twurbo kit is designed as either a bolt-on performance upgrade for the average enthusiast, or as a starting point for the tuner looking to push the Mini Cooper S to very limits of its potential

Like an Apexi SAFC, the DTEC-FC modifies the signal to your ECU to increase or decrease fueling, allowing you to adjust for larger injectors, increased boost, etc. The DTEC uses 4-points of throttle position or MAP value to scale fueling through 18 different RPM ranges in 250 RPM increments. By interecepting the MAP or MAF signal, the DTEC can alter fueling to your specifications. The DTEC-FC is capable of storing 4 different fuel maps for different conditions (i.e. Street Tune, Race Gas, Increased Boost, etc.)The DTEC not only allows for fueling adjustment but also offers all the features of the standart DTEC Gauge Unit, so it can display individual values (i.e. RPM, Knock Count, Injector Duty, TPS) and with additional sensors it can display EGT, Boost, or even Air/Fuel when used in conjunction with the Turbo XS Tuner wideband O2 system (sold separately). The DTEC-FC also includes the Turbo XS Knock Lite, which reads knock from your OEM or an aftermarket knock sensor and gives a visual warning when it detects detonation while also offering a built in shift-light. This is great for cars like the Dodge SRT-4, which don't have a factory tachometer signal, as you do not need an external tach driver.

A key component to any supercharged engine is a high quality intercooler. As air is compressed a by-product is increased air temperature. The intercooler’s job is to reduce the temperature of the compressed hot air exiting the supercharger and entering the engine. The MINI Cooper designers included an intercooler with your Cooper S that is too small for enthusiasts seeking higher horsepower gains. The Alta Performance air-to-air intercooler is 100% larger than the factory unit, but it still fits under the factory hood with no cutting or trimming even though size is nearly doubled. Overall internal volume is increased by over 40%. Included with your intercooler is a new intercooler air diverter to direct air from the hood scoop over the surface of the new intercooler. This all metal air diverter seals to the underside of your hood and directs all of the air entering through your hood scoop over the entire surface of your intercooler. Included, as an option for your air diverter, is a water spray jet for extra cooling in extremely hot conditions. When racing, endurance driving, or driving on a hot day the water spray jet can douse your intercooler with a cooling spray of water. As the water evaporates off your intercooler it will increase the efficiency by over 200%. While water-to-air intercoolers may be an alternative to air-to-air don’t be fooled by false promises of huge gains over this intercooler. Expect 4-6 hours for mounting a water to air intercooler style (requires mounting the core, water lines, water tank, water pump, additional radiator, wiring etc.) Don’t forget the added maintenance of servicing all those components. The water pump will draw additional power away from the engine. This causes an actual loss in power over stock in the lower portions of the rpm band. Dyno results comparing the air-to-air and water-to-air intercoolers show less than a 2 hp gain (If any) over our air to air and only at specific rpms! (Note: Alta's intercooler shows higher gains across the entire rpm band.) Water to air produces the additional 2hp at 6800-7200 rpm only. While a loss in hp from stock is noted below 4500 rpm with water to air intercoolers.)
Dyno results on an otherwise stock mini cooper s show 7 hp and 5 ft/lbs torque at the wheels from 2000 rpm to redline and beyond. Modified cars (pulley, intake and exhaust) produce an additional 9-11 hp and 7-9 ft/lbs torque.
