Lightweight 16x6.5

I know, I know it's been beaten to death, but I may be looking for another set of 16x6.5 to autocross with and don't want to spend on another set of SSR's. It looks like the Rota's and Monza's have been discontinued, so anyone know of another cheap lightweight (<< Stock V-spokes) 16x6.5's out there hiding from me. It appears that no one wants to make a 6.5 inch rim anymore. Or if someone has a set of SSR's they are planning to part with, let me know.

Here is the email I received about the Rotas last year (June 9th, 2005). Looks like it should be just a matter of lead time. Have you contacted these people yet?

We order special for mini fitment,SLIPSTREAM 16x6.5 4X100 45 56.1 RGM
we only have couple set left in gun metal with polish lip.
The weight is 13 lbs.

The cost is $490/set.
you could take a look the color selection.
http://www.rotawheel.com/SLIPSTREAMPAGES.htm
If you want any other color let me know, but will take more time.

We need deposit in advance to reserve the wheels

Please provide phone your number.

Best Regards,
Jessica

Actually, according to the inventory on their website, They show plenty of the slipstreams in 16x6.5, 4x100, 56.1 hub. I'm guessing it is very possible to be out of date, though.

18racing.com seems to have a real good stock of Slipstreams. I got a set from them a couple weeks ago with a second set on the way.

If I understand well, the best choice in 16 x 6.5 will be the SSR, and after that it will be the Rota Slitstreams. Any others one will be good for a ligthweigth wheel in G stock

thank you

Yes, that is correct. Also, understand, the SSR comps vs Rota's will only make a difference of maybe a couple hundredth's of a second on the average course depending on who's driving, with most drivers, it won't matter at all. A lot of it is just mental IMO and feeling confident that your car is prepped to the Max 1.5lbs cannot be felt by most.

SSR Comps $1330 shipped at Tire Rack
Rota Slipstreams $490 shipped at 18racing.com

I would say, if someone were to ask, I'd say go with the rota's and spend the $840 on the following.........

Evolution Phase 1 school - $200
Evolution Phase 2 school - $200
Scrothe Quickfit Harness - $229 - SoloRacer.com - some would say CG lock, but, I like the harness personally.

Spend the rest on your wife, girlfriend or your dog. The above will make a HUGE difference like no other.

thank you for the quik answer.
I prefer the SSR look but for 800$ US cheaper I will go for the Rota. I have already a harness, might go for another exhaust instead. I already plan for an evolution school.

I totally agree with Craig. Lets be honest, most of us could probably stand to loose the 6 lbs we'd be saving by getting the SSR's, me included. Now for that $800, plenty of tires to buy with that.

Dude, add another zero to that 6 and I'll be happy. Maybe by mid season I can be down to 150-160ish. Urrr, uhhh, maybe 190ish.

That's my goal. I figure I can make more time up by me dropping a few pounds than spend more $. Skiing season is in high gear here in UT, so I should be able to drop a few pounds by divisionals.

Isn't 6 lbs at the wheels different than six lbs in the cockpit?

Lighter wheels, in the front anyway, is the eqivilant to installing a lighter flywheel. It does make a difference, I just can't afford the SSR's. Slipstreams on order.

1.5lbs difference on the fronts per side is going to be barely noticable by the highly experienced autox'r. Its definitely as much mental as anything IMO.

I don't know the physics of it but when I was in drag racing the rule of thumb was that 1 lb extra on the driven wheels took 1 hp to turn. It's not as big a difference as 1 lb on a flywheel, but it's significant. I have a 2006 JCW MCS with 18" JCW wheels, and I also have 16" Kosei K1's (yes, they fit over the brakes) and there is a 12lb per wheel/tire difference between the two. Using a G-Tech Pro, I see a .5 second difference in 0-60 mph times between the different wheels, and I imagine the braking distance would suffer, too.

12lb. per wheel/tire is HUGE and a lot of the wheel weight was further out with those 18's. According to GRM 2lb. at the tread surface is = to 4lb. in the car and 2lb. ,on a same dia. wheel, is = to 3lb. in the car. This is just for acceleration and brakeing. Handleing will be improved even more. Another ?? in your 0-60 improvement is tire diameter and tread width and differences in compound. For real street tires, diameter will probably be the most important if the width is anything close to normal.
