What's all the thrust about, anyway? Sign me: Guilty but Happy in LA

My Fellow Mininoids,

I fear I've used you ... about five months ago I registered with NAM, solicited your wise answers to my million stupid questions , used your experience, strength and hope to order my Mini , got my Mini , and never bothered to thank you or tell you how much I love it . I'm so ashamed .

But I'm back to use you some more , I hope. Oh, let me! Please !

Just one more time, 'splain this: When I barely touch the gas peddal, the car seems to thrust. A friend of mine noticed the same thing. This may be because A. I'm a slow driver (I'm the one that you all pass and say unkind things to and about. B. I had been driving a 1992 station wagon for years before my sweet red & white 2006 Mini Cooper drove me into the 21st Century about a month ago. C. ... I forgot C., do you have any idea what it might be?

Anyway, if you have any insight into this, I would be mighty grateful. Meanwhile, I promise never again to ask and run or be one of those -it's all about mini-me-me-me-me- members. Please don't count on my answering any of your mechanical problems (God forbid, we don't have them do we?!!!) But I will be happy to talk color selection with you anytime, day or night. I'm a late spring, early fall kinda gal.

Please accept my belated and future Thanks!

Welcome back.

Could it be called: "horsepower?"

In other words, you suddenly got some that the station wagon didn't? Or is it something else?

Congrats on your MINI

Do you have the CVT or the manual? I suspect the reason why you feel the MINI will "thrust" or "lurge" is partly due to the more sensitive throttle calibration than you're used to, and partly due to the fact that its a pretty light car, so its easy to "move" it, unlike a heavier wagon.

It took me a few weeks to adjust to my MINI after driving a Volvo wagon for 7 years, at low speed it was pretty hard to be drive as smooth as in the Volvo automatic, but eventually I got used to it and now no one complains (including me!)

THROTTLE BY WIRE, it takes some getting used to. Much more sensitive to inputs than the spring return-old fashioned throttle cables. You just have to learn it for a few hundred miles to stop from overrevving while slipping the clutch.

Forgive the supid question CD, but does what you say apply to an automatic? Which is what I have.

The CVT always have a little "lurge" when you're just slightly touching the throttle, maybe there are some techniques you can do, better look at the Cooper CVT forum.

I still think all MINIS are throttle by wire, even with the CVT. When I mentioned overrevving, it's something I noticed both my wife and I did initially. I would guess it's even more sensitive to throttle inputs being linked to the auto...

Cute apology, Pam! Welcome back. The CVT has a little lag, doesn't it? When I test-drove one, I noticed a slight little lag before the acceleration kicked in, anyway. I'm thinking that you are still adjusting to the lighter, peppier vehicle. Happy motoring!
