Hey, I recently purchased everything for my sound system (head unit, sub, amp, etc.). When I was at the car audio shop getting an estimate the guy said that the head unit may void my warranty on the HK system....is this true? anyone else with an HK system switched out their head unit? Also is there someway I can still make the steering wheel controls work with the new headunit. Thanks in advance!

i don't think it really matters....although if you swap out the head unit, you'll loose all the dsp controls for the H/K system. if you don't care about that, i'd say go for it! as far as the steering controls, it depends on what head unit you get, and you'll also have to buy an adapter to make it work then! i know people have had good luck with the adapter and certain alpine head's...do a search guys, you'll dig up a ton of info!

well i got alpine 7894 a pretty pricey head unit but VERY nice...they retail for $400 but i paid $275 (my friends dad owns a local audio shop and he cut me a deal on some things, but he said he won't install it all for me b/c his business has never worked with minis and he doesn't want to screw up or something)

i also got a 10 inch JL audio w3v2 subwoofer. small sub but it can hit...JL audio is known for their amazing clear bass. it doesn't make booming bas, but it produces very nice bass tones that sound great with rock music. i paid $120 for the sub (once again from my friend's dad)

custom sealed box cost me $40 (built by my friend's dad place).

i also got a 300.1 JBL mono amp ($130). its not the best amp, but it sure as hell works! its also small and easy to conceal.

I talked with my mini dealership today and they said that it shouldn't void warranty, but just incase i need to get it professionally installed (which i am).

that's almost the exact same setup i'm getting soon.
i'm gonna get the 7894 and the JL stealthbox. i'm not sure what amp yet.
i'm gonna replace the stock speakers when i've got more $$$....
so much cool stuff to mod on the mini, so little $$$$, so many big plans!!!

the 7894 is an amazing head unit! it already has a prebuilt amp in it, so you won't need an extra amp for your speakers unless you absolutly want it (so the HK speakers will sound even better!). i just remembered the head unit comes with a remote, so if i am not able to reconnect the steering wheel controls it is okay.....i can use the remote! looks like i'll be installing it for sure! I'll keep you updated on how it went.

oh and i forgot to mention! i could already barely hear my valentine one (police radar) with the stereo playing loud when it went off, and sometimes it almost cost me a ticket....since now my sound system is going to be even louder, i am ordering an ear piece so that i can be sure to hear it next time it goes off!

EVEN MORE GOOD NEWS!!! you can install a 7894 head unit in a mini and still have use of your mfsw if you get the the interface from alpine, which is on the market as market part Nr KCE-864B R2. this just keeps getting better and better!

Sale on the alpine head unit.

Just saved u $75! May be able to get it cheaper if u search around, this was the first site i came too. And $400 aint an expensive head unit! Try £850 (approx $1400) for the sony med-1hd unit that i plan to get. Its got built in mp3 hard drive, expensive but cool...its only money! Ow, its on that site for $1049, bargain! check it out and see wot u lot think.

Cool dude. Just one word of caution for you, warranty wise. I can easily see warranty on the speakers being refused should you blow them, since you'll be using a (no doubt) more powerful headunit/amp. FYI. Just don't blow 'em.

haha yea, i kinda figured that out myself...

as for the sony head unit in that link....i'm sure it works great, but to be honest i'm not impressed with any of sony's audio equipment. i've talked with alot of people that know about car audio at shops and at car audio competitions and they agree. usually at car audio competitions you see mostly alpines, kenwoods, and pioneer head units.

well i told my dad this morning I was off to go get in all installed and he recommended I first go to the mini dealership and make sure I won't void the warranty and be sure to get it in writing I stopped in and talked with the guys, they said they were almost sure I won't void it, but I had to be 100% sure so I'm waiting for them to call me back with the good word. i'll kee you updated.
