R50/53 MINI in PBS documentary on teen drivers
MINI in PBS documentary on teen drivers
I just watched a documentary on teen drivers, where they put cameras and mics in teens cars to capture how they drive. One of the kids has a MCS that he drives like a complete idiot!
Has anyone else seen this?
Has anyone else seen this?
Nope....
But if they did the same to me, and my insurance co saw how I hit my hills, my bill would go up. But I don't put others at risk....
The neighbors kid has a lifted Toyota 4x4 pickup. Drives like a total idiot, and puts others at risk. I followed him up the hill once, and his rear end was sliding on every corner. Tailgates all the time. One time my wife was in front of him in our MDX, and pulled over because he was such a ****. He got stuck behind the next car, tailgated that person all the way up the hill...
When he saw my wife pull into our neighborhood right behind him, and then he realized that he'd been an idiot to someone who knew where he lived, he looked scared.... But he'll never change. He and one of his buddies left a party at his house drunk, ran off the road into some bushes a few houses down, and almost ran over the home owner trying to get away. He got the licence plate number and the police were called in... But the kid still has his truck, and still drives like crap.
Teenagers!

This kid did put lots of people at risk including his passengers(So did most of the kids in the video)....In his case in particular, His father prtended that his soon was completely in control. I would not be suprised if the moron is a member on here....My intent is NOT to find him and flame him on here..So if you are him or know who it is...Its best not to say.
Although statistically teen drivers may be more irresponsible than others, I think it's wrong to stereotype us all like that. I'm 19 and consider myself to be a pretty good driver. I've had a lot of experience both on the roads here in the US and in Europe. Sure, I have a tendency to speed on the highway, but don't we all? I don't consider myself to be a danger since I'm always very careful in neighborhoods, simply because this is where the highest risk is.
There are definitely a lot of stupid teenaged drivers (i saw enough of them in highschool), but some of us ARE responsible...we probably are few and far between though...

Do you know if it will be re-aired anytime soon?
I am also a teenage MINI Cooper drive, but consider myself a safe driver. I never go more than 5 over the speed limit in fear of getting a second ticket (which would result in the selling of my car).

Right, but if we are going to **** people off then we might as well go ahead and point the finger at all of us who blatantly, intentionally, and even for purposes of marketing, create a vibe around MINIs in which going fast, hitting the twisties, carving canyons, and driving on the limit seem like everyday "motoring" occurances. You all know it goes on...in our clubs...here...even on the MINIUSA web site. Who can blame (solely) a young driver who latches into the whole thing that has been created? I'll bet (brace yourselves) half our MCS drivers, young and old, would be just as well served by a Cooper. Remember...values (for the young) are caught, not taught. Are we guilty of taking what was essentially a cheeky little commuter car and somehow distorting it (in popular imagination) into an adrenaline producing rocket?
Now some of this is slightly tongue-in-cheek because I know some fine, fine motorers....but some of this is not. In any case, we must be vigilant about these things inasmuch as we are able.

Age class statistics say a lot...
and per mile driven, teenage males are pretty bad. Little experience, no fear, and that "can't happen to me" attitude that we all remember. Doesn't discribe everyone, but sure does describe more teens than 50 year old parents....

Did some googling..
in 2004, teen drivers were 7% of the driving population, but were 14% of accidents....
53% of the accidents were on weekends.
Speed played a part in 1/3rd of the accidents.
Interestingly, I came accross an article looking at insurace age group binning, and it found that the cut-off of 25 years old was appropriate, both pre-WWII and post-WWII..
And the same thing is true, 50 years later!

I have 120,000+ miles driven in the past 3 years, including 8 long dist.(exess of 1k miles each way) drives I have seen a lot of crap happen on the road. My opinion, there is always room to make yourself a better driver. I am almost 19 and pay through the roof on insurance because I fall in the same category as some kid who drives 3 blocks to school, the gets in an accident on the way to the mall. I think racing belongs on the track, driving licenses should be much harder to get, cupholders are merely for asctetics, and if you must use your cell phone pull over, talk then continue driving.
I know that there are other good teen drivers out there, now I need you to post here and support me, its about our only chance to show the rest of world its not the fact that we are young, but how each indovidual drives that matters. flipping through the channels tonight COPS was on and a mustang and camaro got busted for racing, drivers were 39 and 25, whole thing happen in front of a marked squad car

Stereotyping all teenagers as bad drivers is completely wrong...It's all in the maturity & experience. It just so happens that teenagers tend to have less maturity than others. It's definitely a given that we don't have as much experience as others, but you have to start somewhere!
I guess teens don't understand statistics....
The fact that teens contribute twice the amount of accidents as their population would indicate isn't a statement that all teens suck as drivers. But the facts are, that the accident rate on that age group is bad, and once out of that age class, it doesn't get that bad until 75 years + in age....
So teens, you don't have to all chime in and say that you don't drive that way, but stastically, your age groud does drive that way with greater frequency than other groups, until you are a very old fart.
A tounge in cheek suggestion... Take the time you want to take to say that you aren't that bad as an individual, and either read up on the statistics of accident rates, or read a statistics book so that you know that while the accident rate of your peer group is twice "what it should be" for the amount that your peer group drives doesn't mean that every teen is a crappy driver!

I completely understand the point you're trying to get across, but I'm simply trying to crush the blanket statements I've seen posted earlier in this thread. I just find it humorous that everyone has such a great time with the stereotype that ALL teens are bad drivers...Just trying to bring another perspective into this thread; I don't think that would be defined as teens "misunderstanding" the meaning of a statistic.

PLANE Guy...was the show FRONTLINE? Here in the Boston PBS market there is a Frontline show on tonight entitled 'Country Boys' about the coming of age of teenagers in Kentucky...was this the show? It is in three parts beginning tonight at Ppm
