R50/53 New Noise
New Noise
Since I took my MCS in for its first scheduled service this past Saturday (although not its first oil change!), a new noise has developed. The sound is of a quality like a wooden ball hitting a plastic container. It happens when just letting-out the clutch or just before you reach a stop with the brakes applied and also over bumps at speed. It sounds like it is coming from the passenger side front.
Any ideas what it could be?

From the description it sounds like something in the glove box or the door. Did you check these areas? I have seen other threads with mystery noises go on for ever and in the end it was in the door or glove box. Just a suggestion...
It could also be from the passenger door, mine had a bad buzz with music and I fixed it with some felt.

OK...it's not the glove box, GB door or the passenger door.
It seems to be coming from more to the front of the car. It is louder upon starting and turning-off the engine as the car rocks when these occur. It happens more when on a decline than an incline. It seems to be towards the passenger front. For a few moments I thought it was in the pulley systems, but now I am more thoughtful that it is in the dash.
I have been so fortunate to have just about no problems with this MCS...hoping this doesn't continue or becomes a major one.
Thanks.

Hey actually this is a good point, I have a noise I hear in the front of my car, 05mcs, that seems to be from almost like the 'no mans land' between the windshield and the dash. just a little rattling, i dont know what it is. i dont think its something to do with the stick trans, as my step mom has an auto and sometimes gets the noise as well. i dont care, the car runs fine and i just put the stereo a little louder to not hear it. any ideas?

OK...it sounds like something tapping against a vent pipe....anyone have any experience with something loose in the dash ... maybe hanging that can swing into a pipe and make that type of hollow sound?
Thanks.
Thanks.
Oh boy, enjoy this ride:impatient
I've had all of these noises, my whole dash has been taken apart and had sound deadening stuff put in it. Three times. HA!
It still rattles - I'm finished fighting it.
Oh, here's the reason for your rattles since you're likely not to find the actual source: poor build quality to cut costs to make such an amazing car so affordable.

Check your copy of the service performed and see if the microfilter was replaced. This is located below the glove box and maybe if it was not put in very well, it could rattle.
There may be a cover that needs to be pulled down to get to it. If it has been replaced. I would think that removing it and putting it back in may seat it properly. Worth a shot.

The sound is louder if I stick my head up between the dash and windshield. I am thinking I'll take the dash top off and search around ... any chance I'll just create more rattles/squeaks if I do this, or does the dash come off and go back in pretty easily?
Thanks.
Thanks.

In my quest to find the source of this noise I have found that it is quite a bit louder outside the car listening at the passenger front wheel well! I can't hear the noise while driving...if I am going any faster than a few mph.
Has anyone had any pulley noises that have require replacement of any parts?
Thanks.

I openned the microfilter chamber. The filter then hung freely on one side...towards the driver's side. It seems that once the cover is placed on, there shouldn't be any room for the microfilter to move. Nonetheless, I took some foam and put it on the end to secure it in there a bit better, closed the chamber and started up my MCS. Drove a bit. It did seem to lessen the occurence of the knocking which I can mostly closely describe now as sounding like tapping on a musical wood block.
How is the microfilter supposed to be installed? How is it supposed to look? Is it supposed to hang down once the cover is removed? Also, the cover came off after releasing 4 plastic snaps...there seems to be 4 screw holes also, but no screws are there.
I think the next step is to add more foam and see if it fixes it....
Thanks again for the idea.
I've only read about how it goes in and never actually put one in. I wouldn't think it would have to be extremely tight, like adding more foam than you have now. But if you believe the foam did help but hasn't solved the problem, I would make sure again and carry it to the dealer.
Be careful though. You don't want any stray foam flying through your duct work.

Well, didn't drive the MCS for over a week and now that I have it uncovered again...my gas gauge works! Good thing. Still...the rattle is there...I am going to take the dash apart and look around...just haven't gotten to it. If I find it in an hour or two of investigation, that still saves me 5 hours as our dealer is so far away and I have to have my wife drive also to give me rides back and forth since I have to leave the MCS.
So my wife and I took turns using a stethoscope in various places to try and locate the source of the knocking we are hearing. It seems loudest near to the passenger side motor-mount. Does anyone have any info re mounts and what happens if they are failing. I have experienced completely broken ones before...but maybe someone has had an experience of cracks or changes that have caused noises, etc..
This is a noise that is hard to locate!!! Definitely sounds like a knocking on plastic...a little hollow and loud. Really heard at idle and when starting or turning-off the engine.
Thanks for any help.

OK....I scheduled an appointment at the dealer to let them fix the knocking. Couldn't get an appointment for two weeks plus!...but yesterday...I went around a sharp corner and there was this noise like a rock loosening from a tire and hitting the wheel-well and low and behold...no more knocking! The sound is gone. I definitely am enjoying just the normal sound of our MCS. Of course I am continuing to wonder what caused the noise and where the source might be now...did it get thrown from the car or is it just lodged somewhere to loosen and reappear later???
I think have a rather similar sound - dull kind of knocking, but it's very regular, almost like a "burble". With the hood up, I can't hear it very well with the car engine running, so I don't think it's actually in the engine compartment. It sounds sort of like it's coming from over the dash, but I'm not positive.
If you've made any progress, I'd be curious.
