Clicking noise on takeoff/brake
Clicking noise on takeoff/brake
My 05 MCS has developed a "clicking" when I start to take off or begin braking (this happens both in a straight line and when turning. I jacked up the front left of the car and can reproduce the sound by trying to turn the tire/wheel by hand with most of my weight. It sounds like it is in the CV Joint, but unlike a classic CV joint going bad, I don't get the usual frequent clicking when turning. Anyone else have this problem?
Do you happen to have the web spoke wheels? I had seen people mention that as an issue with some of them and thought I saw that people had the offending wheels replaced under warranty (I think that it was caused by a problem in the fit of the two pieces that the wheels are made of).
eVal - I have removed the wheel and screwed the bolts in and using a bar to put rotational force on the axle, I can still reproduce the sound, so it isn't the wheels, unfortunately.
ministrone - did the axle replacement fix the problems? That is what I am leaning towards for diagnosis.
BTW - no relation to Peter

I think I am having the same issue. I can hear clicking in 1st gear when accelerating and braking... it sound like someone tapping on thin metal. I'll try your wheel test next time I have it in the air.

Yes changing the axle fixed the problem. The bearing change didn't fix it.
I knew it wasn't the tires as I had changed them to non-runflats with different rims.
I recently had the right axle done, as it made a more subtle clicking upon acceleration.
The loud metallic click was really prominent on the left side. Occasionally it still does, but only when I reverse, and not enough to warrant concern. Although my lease/warranty will be up in June so if I want to buy it out I'll be getting them to go over everything again.
Definitely a warranty issue. I've got a good relationship with my technician and I never get any runaround.
Hope that helps.

I thought this might help - found this Service notice on AllData:
M310105 JUN 05 Suspension - Front End Clicking/Creaking on Bumps/Turns
I do not have an account and access to the details, but it sounds promising, hope it helps - the "M310105" is the bulletin number that the tech can look up.

8) Re-torque nut to 134 ft-lbs.
9) Tap lip of the axle-nut back into the indentation to lock it in place. Again...use a brass drift punch to make sure you don't damage
