Limited Slip Differential from Ford as well?

OK:

Getrag 6 speed in Ford Focus SVT as well...

So where I can see the Quaife part no. for the MINI Cooper 6-speed Getrag transmission (Quaife part number 56.309.190 from http://www.quaifeamerica.com/differe.../diff_apps.htm )

I also see the same part number for the Ford Focus SVT...

Hmmmm. I dig around in some of the Ford racing stuff and find this:

www.fordracingparts.com/parts/part_details.asp?Partkeyfield=8837

Quaife= +/- $1100, Ford= $779.

Anybody got some experience with both of these to know if this backwards parts cross-ref would work?

Thanks

Derek

I believe its the same g.box and you can add Audi TT as well to the list.

yes but

The Quaife site calls for a different LSD. The possible find here is the Ford racing item that I can get "down the street"...

The ford diff fits no problem. I've installed 3-4 of them, you just need to spend 30 seconds with a die grinder and clearance one spot on the case.

The Ford Racing Performance URL is mangled up above.

http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts...tKeyField=8837

Is it really the same part? It doesn't seem clear because of the comment that Quaife lists the MINI part as a different stock number.

~~ addendum ~~

Nevermind, the Quaife America site lists the same part number 56.309.190 for both the Focus SVT and the MCS.

ok, slight variation on this post (hopefully it wont get too many off topic) can an 06 MCS 6 speed manual transmission be transplanted into an 06 MC? I did a search and found lots on going from 05 into 03's but didnt see any from about swapping between MCS and MC of the same year. I assume that it would be as straight forward as just changing out the transmission (assuming same engion block and bell housing) but was wondering if anyone had done it or even knows if the mounting is the same. I know im going to hear " why didnt you just buy a MCS?" Ans: wanted the better gas milage and couldnt wait until 07 to get a new car (read as: MC with 6 speed trans).

Getting back to the orginal post, I am interested in this. The key is to find out iof the MCS and the SVT 6 spd use the same tranny. It is not out of the realm of reality to think that Ford and BMW would source the same 6 speed for a FWD car.

Now, if we can determine if the trannys are the same or if the Quaife units are the same, I would guess the Torsen unit would be the same. The Torsen was invented in Rochester and while the company/technology was sold, I can try to find out if they have any info on this as they still have something here(I live in Rochster).

Vince -

The SVT folks call their trannys "Getrag 6-speeds"....

Quaife Inc. calls for same LSD unit for both the MINI and the SVT.

If I had a little more money I'd be willing to gamble on this one, although I understand that they are backorder at Ford, as it looks like the LSD unit for the SVT wasn't released unitl 10/31/05, WAY after the cars first came out. (Does that sound familiar?).

Is there any technical difference between the two?

There's no question, the transmissions are definitely the same.

I mean technical difference between the way a quaife works and the way a torsen works.

as my clutch is almost toast. What did it take to modify the Ford unit? Do you have any photos?

The classical Torsen T-1/TrueTrac design cannot deliver power to the wheel with traction if the other wheel has none or is in the air. That's why the old Hummer manual says to simultaneously apply the brake in such situations in order to provide a load that can be torque biased. The new ones apply brakes automatically from the traction control. This diff design never wears out.

The Quaife design (and the newer Torsen T-2 in the link above) are essentially Torsens with added preload springs\clutch elements to overcome this problem. If the clutch wears out, you are left with a Torsen T-1.

What is the required modification with the grinder that is required to make this work? Any pics?

Any feedback from the 3-4 other MINI owners?

What year MCS did you install the Ford diff on?

Me TOO

Yes, please, with sugar, and what ever assortment of toppings you prefer... Pray tell us more about the Ford/Mini Quaife Mod.

BTW, it is not uncommon for an exactly same part to be marked up differently for the market segment targeted...

Cheers,
MinMax

Thanks! :-) So even if they wear out, I'm still better off than an open diff as is currently in the MINI, right?

What do you think is the $200 difference between the SVT diff and the regular Focus diff? Both Torsen T-2 types.

Not sure, but they show two diff parts and I wonder if one is for the regular Focus and one is for the SVT???

It looks like the SVT diff is the one we need - for the 6 speed Getrag gearbox. $779 is better than ~$1,000 - Group buy???
