After Oil Catch Can...still oil found in IC boot..?

Good Morning to All...

I know there are plenty of threads regarding the CC, installation, etc. I've installed the CC in a couple different ways but currently have it connected from the PCV valve to CC and CC to vaccum line.

I had the IC off this weekend and noticed that the IC boots had oil (more on the right side) in the grooves. I inspected the CC contents and only found a small pool of oil which by no means even covered the bottom of the CC.

I've read where some have stuffed the CC with material so the oil isn't sucked directly from intake to output.

Can someone first tell me is this the reason why I have minimal sludge in the CC and finding some in the IC grooves and then second what is being used as a "filter" element within the CC. Has anyone devised a divider that would section off the CC, that is, seperate the input from the output?

Thanks for all input.

Interesting...was the IC yellow/brown inside like if it was coated in oil?

mdsbrain,
The first groove of the boot off the IC had a little puddle of brown (oil?) substance. The right boot had more than the left. There was also a light coating of this substance on the two IC flanges that slip into the boots.

I'm assuming since there is so much suction with the way I have it connected that the oil/sludge is being sucked right from the input to the output of the catch can. I've read where people have filled the CC with steel wool or something and wanted input on this.

Put something non-corrosive like stainless steel wool or chain in the catch can to give the droplets something to "stick" to as they pass through.

Wouldn't there be a concern with small pieces of the steel wool breaking off and being sucked into the IC? Chain may be a good approach. Any other suggestions on what could be used to stuff the can?

I used ss "Scrubbies", not a wool, more like a flattened wire. I also found oil in my intercooler boots and eventually ditched the cc.

I also used the kitchen scrubbies as well as a ss lint trap. And, like yourself, and apparently jlm, I too noticed oil or oil residue in my IC boots this past weekend...

I'm not about to throw-in the towel just yet though as I've only had my occ installed for maybe 500 or so miles. What I'm trying to say is that there may have been "stuff" already in that path that is still getting worked-out. Time or more miles will say for sure though. I will drain my can a bit later to see what's inside...

I just installed the ALTA Oil CC last weekend. To my surprise they now include 6 or so yellow and red soft foam like sponge rings recommending to you placing it on the bottom of the can . After I done so I am very happy with the results. You can remove these and just wash them in plain soap and warm water. They can also be easily replaced with any soft foam packing material cut in to 8-10 inch strips size like French fries. My Oil CC is connected just between the check valve and the vacuum working just great. I may add a internal stiffening ring to eliminate the can being squished by the vacuum.

Are you saying your CC came with the foam pellets? If so, I may be able to buy them from Alta.

I used a piece of PVC, think it was a connector of some sort, which fit perfectly diameter wise. This keeps the silicone can from collapsing.

Now I just need to figure out what to pack the can with.
