K&N Typhoon for '05 Cooper

Hi guys,

I wanna install the typhoon for my sister's '05 Cooper, but it seems that K&N only has it for the '02-'04. Has anyone fitted it for the '05?

I'm looking for cone type filters only so maybe you guys might know other brands that will fit although i'm highly biased for K&N...

Please help?
Thanks!

Believe it or not, not a single vendor has stepped up to the plate with an intake for '05 Coopers. A couple of members here have forced them in with a bit of metalworking, though.

That sucks... maybe there isn't a demand for them.. What kind of metal work is needed? Shortening of the tube? I've searched and it seems Ingen has a cone filter for the '05. Or maybe they just assumed that it's the same fit from the '04. I've emailed them so it's the waiting game now.

I bet that the assumption is exactly what they did. Keep us informed.

From what I hear the 05/06 Airbox is Pretty good.

Hey Rick, I am sorry I did't get back to you. But, I just ordered an '06 MCS JCW, so all work on the MCc is temporarily suspended. <img>

Ingen Filter...

Seems that it'd fit the '05... maybe i'll take the plunge and try it.

Anybody have any idea how good Ingen really is? It's more of an American brand unlike K&N whereby they are internationally known. The only place i've heard of Ingen is while playing the PS2 game Need 4 Speed...

Anyways, here's the website for the Ingen filter. And this the place i might get it from.

still looks too long.

worth a shot tho, it might rub, but its up to you if you want it to rub thru the hoodliner.

it can be solved simply by cutting the tube down about 2 inches, then you can turn it down towards the tranny more giving it hood clearence.

The other brand that i've checked up on is on MossMini's website. The brand called Cobalt... I've emailed them asking which will fit, the K&N or the other brand that they carry, Cobalt. They've replied saying the Cobalt will fit. The filter "looks" good aesthetically... but not sure how it performs. Think the reason why it'd fit is because the filter is shorter? But i don't like their customer service. It's as though they are not interested in my business.

i'm modding cobalts to fit 05's.

i can also get the correct K&N filter to go along with the cobalt intake so there isnt any cuting required.

the cobalt still needs a bracket to be ground off and smoothed out to fit an 05.

alsom the filter you get with the cobalt is different than the one in the picture, the one you get is long and skinny, not fat and short, you cant judge off the picture what it looks like.

also, the "anodized" finish is painted on, its crappy paint too.

Thanks RednWhite!

Yeah, i didn't think Cobalt was that good a brand... as opposed to K&N anyways... i think second choice would be Injen. But if cutting the pipe is required... i might wait for a while...

haha the last cutting job (which is the areo grill) knocked the wind out of me... I didn't have the proper tools so had to hand saw the timmings. Took me 2 days to do everything.

Furthermore, this is not my car! But it's nice to hear the induction roar for the Coop.

If i were to cut the piping... would it be 1" on each end or 2" from the throttle end or the filter end?

Moss has lost me as a customer. They sold me a skid plate that was missing the mounting screws, and refused to help me set things straight with the manufacturer, which I was never able to do. I don't recommend buying from them if you can the product you want from anywhere else.

If the Cobalt was the only intake that fit my car, and Moss was the only place that sold it, I just wouldn't buy an intake.

if your going to use the moss filter (AFE) you need to remoe about 1 1/2 or so inches from the filter end. while installed, the filter should almost touch the return line bung on the tube. just set the filter on the tube, leave about 1/4 inch b/w the bung and the bottom of the filter, mark it with a sharpie, remove filter, add about an inch above the line you just made and cut on the new line.

if you use the K&N's i use, no cutting is required, but you still need to grind and massage the 02-04 bracket off the tube. (go figure, a company gets the TIG welds good on an item and you have to grind em off)

but, as ive said, i can build one for you if you would rather not do it yourself, comes all ready to go, bolt it on, just like any GOOD FITTING Intake

Hence the reason why I took 2 days... didn't have the proper tools...

I wasn't willing to pay for something i was only going to use once... But it seems it's getting more and more handy!

Thankfully i've found someone who has it and he's willing to lend it to me!

Once you have a Dremmel, You wondered how you ever got stuff done before! Heck use the right location of the case and a Dremmel will even drive in a nail! Not too good for the dremmel but....

I have bought quite of few things off of Mossmini's website. I have had no issues as of yet (I have another package coming tomorrow). I bought the skid plate and love it. I also bought the cobalt intake because it was on sale for 50 bucks. I will let you guys know how it performs in a couple of days.
