My car is pinging after adding more boost.

My car started pinging after I added some more boost recently to my MCS. I've always used the same gas. What do you think it might be? Can A/F ratios cause pinging? Or is it timing? Or could it be with my stock exhaust I've created too much backpressure which is causing the pinging? Or is it something else?

More boost = more heat. You probably need a cooler plug.

TheOfficeMaven had similar problems even with Denso IK22's. Any news on that?

If a set of cooler plugs doesn't solve the pinging, it would seem that higher octane gas is in order. When you play be prepared to pay....

True. What brand and grade of gas are you using?

Water injection is also an option. I dont remember where it was, but there was a big conversation about water injection a couple months back...

On a similar note, I still have the stock plug wire...yes, with 53k miles on them. I'm going to try a different set of plug wire tomorrow afternoon.

I just got back from trying a few gallons of 101 octane racing fuel added to just slightly over 1/2 tank of normal super unleader pump gas. I tend to buy my fuel from Costco. I've got 53k miles and most of those miles were propelled by Costco gas. Of course it was only 2 tanks ago I got more boost...which was when the pinging started.

I'm working diligently with my mechanic to try to resolve the issue. I'm just wanting to pull in as much information on the subject as I can.

If you are pinging, then you really need to know your a/f ratio and timing. If you are running lean as a result of adding boost, then you will need to add fuel or retard timing via an adjustment to your tune. You need to know your a/f anyway, since any time you change your boost you run the risk of leaning out too much.

What did you do to make more boost? I assume you put in a reduction pulley? What type of pulley did you install? 19%? Many people who are running a 19% pulley are running bigger injectors, colder plugs, and tuning. Please give us more information about your setup to help you more with your problem!

I'm running 440 injecotrs. I'm off the dyno chart on the too rich side atfter 4k RPM. I always surmissed that my car ran richer than other MCS's even when I had no mods, or just the pulley and intake.

Like I've mentioned, I'm working with my mechanic to get it resolved. I'm just trying to further educated myself on the topic so I can understand it better. I'm running a turbo in addition to the supercharger (gotta love HELOCs! ). In addition to the other items mentioned in the thread, I also am running an APEXi controller.

I really am beginning to think my car already had a problem prior to adding the additional boost. It was just the addition of boost that brought about this symptom.

Understandable now. Looks like it may need for better fuel tuning. I hope everything works out for you! Would love to get a ride in a twin charged setup!

I was able to get it down to my mechanic and he has determined the noise to be mechanical in nature. It is coming from the belt tensioner idler. I should have it fixed soon.

This was not a ping related to fuel, but a mechanical ping. Sorry for the "scare".
