Porsche Brake conversion- Anyone

I keep seeing the Porsche brakes on some of the cars in GoMINI... Has anyone done this? Is it significantly better than the stock?

That is a SWEET conversion - and only a tiny bit more than the JCW setup - but obviously a LOT more functional! VERY nice!

There may be minor differences between the two, but the Porsche caliper is bacisally a Brembo product. So, if you want the kit, you can buy it from Tirerack or any vendor that sells Brembo products. Still, the pricing is a bit steep (~$2,500+).

If I found a wrecker/donor car is this a DIY project? Which Porsche should I be looking for? Will the Boxter System work?

That is a good question! I been looking on Ebay for Porche brakes and they do sell sort of cheap. All that is left is to by the larger rotor from The TireRack and FAB some brackets and you would have a good brake setup for less that most other out there

Wont this almost be to the point of being too much brake? i.e. the ABS will constantly kick on due to exorbinate bite breaking the tires loose locking the wheel?

Wondering if you are really thinking this through.

How are you planning on mounting the calipers?
How are you planning on mounting the rotors, if that's even possible.
Fact is that even if you got a set of Pcar brakes for free it will most likely cost you as much or more then the kit.

Just get yourself a set of TCE Wilwoods. I outbrake P-cars all the time with mine.

Don't the other kits come with a mounting bracket? So couldn't one be fabricated or bought?

Not sure yet, may just get an aftermarket BB set from another vendor

Just exploring all of my options... I am still in my warranty so I am taking it slow...
But seriously thinking the BBK thru- just want the right option at the right price.

While the parts may come up cheap on ebay, onasled brings up some good points;

The calipers themsleves won't 'bolt up' without some custom radial brackets. Figure on about $350+ for the pair, after the time to figure the numbers, and at a 'good buddy' price.

The rotors won't make much issue. The hats will. The good deal hats will have to be redrilled, both the center bore (or sleeved) and the bolt pattern I too I suspect. If that comes out ok then all you have to worry about is the hat offset being effective for the fit to the knuckle. And lining up properly with the caliper bracket above.

Bias and MC issues. The parts found are intended for the application they are installed on. Fitting them to a vehicle with a different weight distribution, bias design and perhaps different MC bore size is plain foolish. At the least the need for evaluating and taking into account these issues should be taken into consideration.

In the end you'd be dollars ahead to purchase a kit fit to the MINI fron the begining. The bolt up aspects alone will justify the cost vs what you'll go through to make it work on your own. *granted there are some who may own a machine shop and such who can fab some of this on the cheap, but I doubt that's you cuz you'd have stated it was an easy project in your spare time.

Fitting Non-Standard Calipers on a MINI

This is almost a daily phone call at StopTech,

"I got this sweet deal on these huge brakes off a ___________ and I want to put them on my _________."

This is either followed by "And the guy said they would fit" or "I read on the Internet somewhere that they will fit."

Brake systems alone (not even bringing ABS into the equation) are very complicated mechanical pieces. Todd at TCE brings this up in the earlier post.

Next time you want to put the brakes from an X and put them on an X, please be sure to do the math:
http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/Th...%20Systems.pdf

I hate to be a downer but I just don't want any MINIs harmed with ill-fitting parts, especially when I won't have mine for another two weeks!

I made a little search and there is no way to get away with the conversion under $2,500.00. Why bother, just get the brembos, if you would like to spend that much. It started as a good idea, but in reality it is not feasible.
