I have the chance of getting JCW wheels/tires for my car for about $550. The dealer will take my s-lites in on trade and all I have to do is pay $550 difference. I still have a couple of weeks to make up my mind since my car hasn't been delivered yet.

To me it sounds like a good deal, but looking for some other opinions.

From what I gather, the JCW wheels are heavy! Before you decide, you really ought to take a spirited drive in a car with lightweight wheels (16s or better yet 15s) & one with heavier wheels such as S-lites or JCWs. The difference borders on amazing!

Absolutely go for the JCW wheels! They cost over 2 grand to purchase after the fact, and the S-Lites are as common as dirt! There's no way you could get $1500 for them selling them on your own.

If for whatever reason you don't love your JCW wheels, you can sell them for triple the price and get any kind of wheels you want.

As for the weight, the JCW wheels which are 18" are just about the same weight 17" s-lites they replace. Plus, unlike the ultra-lightweight wheels out there, they are very strong. Add to this that the 5-spoke design looks outstanding, and they are incredibly easy to keep clean, and that they are oem, so no problems with warranty claims on them, and $550 is the deal of the century.

Lastly, the 18" rims will fit every big-brake kit out there. Not so with the 17's. The lug nuts are covered on the JCW wheels, unlike the s-lites. This is just an aesthetic advantage.

 

Excellent deal. Take it. Not only do the JCW R95 wheels fill out the arches like almost nothing else, but they're also lighter than a few of the OEM 17" wheels and offer great ventilation. And I can say from my own experience that they are incredibly tough. I would gladly take the trade off of a few pounds for extra durability over bad roads.



I've driven MINIs with 15" and 16" wheel extensively over the years. While small lighter wheels can be more "lively" I much prefer the razor sharp feel of a thin sidewall that larger wheels give you. And while looks are subjective, I feel larger wheels work well with the high belt-line and large wheels arches of the MINI. The car was simply designed with that look in mind.

Are you sure you're going to like the ride of 18's in your area?
just a question about function for your particular application.

 

I think I'll be OK right now. I'm currently stationed in the Netherlands where the roads are well taken care of. Not a lot of potholes. I'm heading back stateside in January and it's the road there that I'm concerned about. After reading some of the comments here, I'm going to go ahead and get them and if I don't like them I'm sure I'll be able to sell them again.

And that would leave him with WHAT wheels and tires? The $550 price was an upgrade cost. He'd be pretty stupid to sell the JCWs for $1000 without having another set of wheels & tires to replace them.

I mean, it's nice to make an offer, but you're insulting him by only offering $1000. Maybe if you had offered to give him YOUR (brand new condition?) wheels & tires in trade, plus $1000, that would make more sense.

 

I don't even have my car yet!!! It won't even be here until next month. Once it arrives, the dealer swaps my wheels and tires for the JCWs. Thanks for the offer but I think I'll stick with the JCWs at least until I bring my car back to the States in January.
