Navigation & Audio TOMTOM Navigator 5 / Treo 650
I do not have a GPS unit myself but I have been keeping an eye on the new products that have been coming out in recent months. I also work in the wireless industry (as an outside counsel to a number of wireless carriers), so I have been following developments with bluetooth and other wireless technologies from that perspective.
That being said, I haven't seen the Tom Tom Navigator 5. I have seen the Tom Tom Go 700, and it is pretty cool. From what I can tell, it is the only "all in one" GPS device that has built-in bluetooth technology, so the device can communicate with your Treo (i.e., you can use the GPS unit to access address and telephone number from your Treo) and it acts as a handsfree speakerphone.
I think you can find the Tom Tom Go 700 for under $800 if you shop around online.
Good luck! Keep us informed about what you learn.

First, welcome to NAM, The Silver Bullet!
Second, here is another thread on the TomTom that you may find helpful.
For future reference, and before someone else throws a rant your way, you might try the search feature below the yellow MINI in the banner photo to find previously discussed threads about a topic you are interested in.

excellent, thank you and I was "almost" sure I had used the search function. But in all honesty I'm getting a little bleary eyed with catching up on the multiple Mini boards, tracking my build, finding accessories, reviews.
In my excitment I might have gotten sloppy.
Accept my appologies .. and I'll look out for the rants

I've got a Garmin GPSIII+ also - it's tried and true... great all-around unit.
I originally got it back in my 4x4 days, because you can easily dismount it and use it hiking/biking/etc. and it's waterproof (submersable to 2M or so), but I've never tested that aspect of it... just nice to know in a Jeep when it rains.
It's strong suit has never been street navigation, however, at the time it was one of the few with basemaps built-in.
It's about time for me to start looking into nav systems that do turn-by-turn nav with color screens and the works.
I personally want a larger screen that the current Street Pilot series offers, and some of the other Garmin devices are simply TOO big (I don't need a chartplotter in my MINI).
There was a time when I would not even think of another brand other than Garmin (Ford vs. Chevy - that's all it amounts to). Lately, TomTom has been producing some killer products. I may be converted pretty soon.
The TomTom device that also stores MP3s and plays them through your stereo is pretty cool - more features will become standard across the board in the next couple of years, too.
Consider EBay - lots of good sellers and good prices there - of course, caveat emptor.
I've also had great dealings with TheGPSStore.Com - I've bought many things from them.

I always forget about eBay. I'll check it out. I hadn't even heard of Tomtom until recently. I like the idea of having 1 "machine" PDA/GPS to worry about in my car ...
... now if I could just figure out my satellite dilemma.
thanks.

I have a TomTomGo in my Mini. I found that attaching the suction cup windshield mount to the windshield puts the TTG in bright light too often. So now I stick the suction cup to the flat plastic cover on the center speedometer cover. That holds it fine and it is easy to read. I got mine for $550 at HarmonyComputer.com.

I have it
I have this combo, and while the TOMTOM is great, the Treo 650 is a bit slow. It works good, not great. It does however work fantastic on my Dell Axim, the screen is bigger and the processor is faster. It does work fine on the 650, but the screen refresh is not as fast, and sometimes the turn comes too late. I use this combo when I travel, I carry the TOMTOM GPS with me and always have my phone, the maps are all on a SD card which I can switch from my axim to my Palm, it works even though they are on different OS which is nice. The file format is the same.

I have a Treo 650, Tom Tom and a ProClip setup. It all works great together. There are no speed issues as far as I can tell with my 650. With my AUX adapter, I can listen to MP3s and run Tom Tom together. This way the voice instructions from Tom Tom come through along with the MP3s on my H/K! It's just as good as a factory nav in that regard (and I can take it along with me as I travel!)
Silver,
I've recently purchased Tom Tom 5 and have found it to be a great product. It compare very favorably to the Navman iCN 510 that I also have. Routing and re-routing is very quick and the point of interest database seems very robust.
If you choose this route, here is a link to the site I bought from. http://www.buygpsnow.com/. They have some pretty good bundles that include the software and a GPS antenna. I went the wired route rather than a bluetooth antenna. The wiring is very easy to hide. They will also include a free mount, but I would recommend checking out www.ProClipUSA.com instead. Their mounts are a little pricey but IMHO they are the best.
Sometime next week I plan to clean up the install of my system by installing a lighter adapter under the dash. Once I do that, there should be only one cable from the PDA. I've placed the antenna at the corner of the dash and run the connecting cab;es under he dash. It looks pretty clean in my opinion.
Hope this helps.
