Keeping OEM HU

If you kept your oem head unit and replaced only the speakers, NO AMP, please say which speakers and how you like them. (eg:clarity, bass response, etc.)

If you kept the hu and added new speakers AND and amp, please share that info., including whether you used a line out converter or the speaker level inputs of the amp.

Finallly, did anyone keep the hu, factory speakers, and add only an amp?

Thanks!

If you replace the OEM speakers with decent quality ones, they are going to need to be powered by an amp to sound their best. The stock HU only puts out 15 watts or so, and a good set of speakers will be expecting at least 80 watts, probably more.

So while new speakers will work without an amp, they will be underpowered and will not put out the sound quality that they would with an amp.

Im running:

Head Unit: Factory Non-HK
Front speakers: Polk DB525 (coax)
Rear speakers: Factory
Subwoofer: Infinity BassLink

I like the sound. 10x better than stock, that's for sure.
You have to know how to tune the EQ, fader, subwoofer
EQ, and gain controls in order to get a solid tone. A lot of
times kids just blast the bass and think it's cool... it
just gives me a headache and honestly most expensive
car stereo's i hear sound like crap because the person doesn't
know how to tune everything together. either super bright,
or super bassy or super both.

Polks by far (imho) make the best sounding coax's out there
for the price. Very balanced sound, not too bright, not too
mellow. Plus, the wattage is low enough that you can power
it well with your factory HU. One of the reasons why I don't
buy expensive components when running factory HU.

(If I was going to run components, i would end up buying
the whole 9 yards and quickly be a $2K+ system. I don't
have that much to spend on a car stereo...rather spend
that money on suspension/performance mods)

Ken:
Was it difficult to run the wires to the Sub? Or is it pre-wired like for the CD Changer?
Thanks,

BTW, I saw your page, yours is a sweet ride...

Thanks, I replied to your PM too.
To access the rear speakers, I had to remove the rear seats and
rear side panels to get access to them. it's not too bad. It was not
pre-wired on my car. I ran the speaker-level wires to the BassLink.
no noise, no whine, works like a charm.
