Navigation & Audio disappointed in Navigator and window
Let me make myseft clear.
The Navigator works great. The disappointing part is, you lose the temp gauge. Which I feel it's just as important as a gas gauge. I really like the one touch UP on my other car. What's the problem with Mini, having this
Thanks

Dunno...
I don't have the problem of getting lost. The "Mini" design was for a large central located speedometer, not a damn nav system. At $1250.00, I can find my way, and have fun doing it!!!

You can have one-touch up windows in the US, my friends Audi has them. BUT, they have to put in an extra sensor that makes sure that the window isn't rolling up with something blocking it. I really like one-touch up, but my MCS is way cooler than her Audi!! So I guess I'll have to suffer
>>Well ok, but it's not too clear yet...
But BMW's not the only manuf that feels this way... I've never seen this feature on any US car. What did you have that had it?
My wife's Lexus RX300 has one touch up window. If you put your hand in the way it hits your hand and goes back down! So there is no legal reason you can't have it. Obviously there is a sensor or something....

I don't have the problem of getting lost either. I still love my NAV system! It does more than just provide a map - which, by the way, is a hugely helpful feature when your co-pilot gets carsick doing any reading and can't look at a map, and it allows you to concentrate on MOTORING. It also provides information on a a variety of things from banks to restaurants, etc. Beyond the actual NAV system capabilities, the computer is more robust and offers some interesting things like outside thermometer, estimated mileage on remaining fuel, and gas mileage and average speed calculators. None of which are essential, but very handy - again they let you FOCUS ON MOTORING by freeing you up from figuring that stuff out in your head (or on the calculator).
Point is... Just because you don't see the need, or have the desire/money/preference/whatever - you don't need to slam it.
Anyhow, I too am frustrated at not having a temp or oil pressure gauges. I know there is an aftermarket gauge cluster available, but I can't remember who offers it...

Even my lowly 2000 VW Jetta has one-touch up windows. They are a wonderful feature for those of us who need to go past security gates, toll boots, or pay parking lots every day. I would gladly have paid the $1.98 extra ($225 BMW pricing) that it would have cost MINI to incorporate this into the premium package.

Just in case it's not clear, you do get all of those features (outside temp, estimated mileage, etc.) with the regular, non-nav, computer. They display on a small lcd below the tach. and are selected by a button on the turnsignal stalk.
I think the nav system is cool...I just wanted to save $1200. I'm sure that soon virtually all cars will have them (sort of like how all cars will eventually be AWD, IMO) and the cost will be negligible

Thanks - that was not clear to me. I thought the non-nav computer offered only a few of those items. Quite interesting! I suppose then that the primary advantage regarding the computer info is the NAV display.
I think the strong anti-nav system opinions are mainly due to the fact that for a lot of people, the huge central speedo is one of their favorite features of the car. The nav system reduces it to a little dinky Mickey Mouse ear on top of the steering column. So, aesthetically this is offensive to some (like me!). It detracts from the character of the car for kind of a wimpy reason, and for a whole lot of $. Obviously, people that find maps to be difficult or bothersome, or for whom $1250 is insignificant, think differently.
Very well stated. Although I do think differently, I can't say that it is for any of the reasons you mention. Primarily, I am a gadget freak. Neither did I have any experience with or legitimate ties to the classic Mini that gave me such strong feelings about the central speedo. I admit that it is cool, but I think having the NAV monitor there is cool too! I would venture to guess that I've gotten as many remarks about it as others have about their speedo. For that matter, the "Mickey Mouse" ears have generated some incredulity of their own: "You mean they're stock?" As for the $1,600 - I only wish I could say it was insignificant - it was, however, worthwhile - IMHO.
Another classic example of "To each his own." I love the fact that the MINI allows so many variations that we all can get what we like best. In our attempts to justify our own decisions to ourselves, however, we frequently come off sounding like we're trying to convince everyone else that we are right. It isn't a question of right/wrong, good/bad, it is a matter of preference. I'm glad you like the central speedo, but I'm even more glad that I was able to get the NAV!

Well said.
Can you imagine someone a couple of years down the road spending a bunch of time on this site, and then trying to find the exact car they want - used?
"Well, I want chili red, but only if it has a white roof, otherwise only british racing green all around will do. And no white wheels - I hate brake dust! I want the nav system, but not the onboard computer, and I want the manual dials for temp control. Sunroof is a must, but I sure do hate bonnet stripes. And if I can't find space cloth, I suppose leatherette will do, but nothing else. And none of that aftermarket stuff under the hood, either!"

I'm disappointed when I see a Navigator in my window too. (a Lincoln Nav that is.)

There is a idiot light, but no gauge ( water or oil temp.gauge). My other car
with one touch up or down windows is a 2000 Mercedes CLK 430 both sides. It works
great at a toll both in bad weather. At the same time shifting your gears and holding your steering wheel with your other hand. GEEE that one touch would be great.
Thanks

I don't have a problem of getting losted, it's what I can find with the Nav.. Picked up my MCS on 9-19-02 on my 51st brithday, a gift from wife. You never kiss a gift horse in the mouth. As I was saying from Sept. til now I have 10,4017 miles. I just love driving and the Mini makes it that much better.
Thanks

>>The window thing is US Gov. safety stuff - they think we'll cut an arm off if we have one-touch-up.
I mention that I have a Mercede CLK 430 and it has the one touch.
What's good for one Company should be good for another. Unless they rule this after
the year 2000.
Thanks

the one touch UP feature is available on US spec cars because my boyfriend's mother drives a Lexus IS300 and the driver's said has the one touch UP feature on it. I love it and wish the Mini had it as well.

My wife is having the new instrument cluster installed in my IB while I'm gone for a few months. The cluster can be purchased and installed by your local Mini dealer. Its a dealer side aftermarket part, therefor it will not damage your warranty. I'm also having the Rally lights and Mini alarm installed.
Does this sound right?
The new cluster w/ temp & voltage = $350 installed
The Rally lights = $350 installed
The allarm = $350 installed
My friends have been making fun of these prices for about a month now.
"Hey, you want a new engine, $350. You need a new boot, $350."
Everyone has to make fun.

I wanted the NAV because I liked the 'Micky Mouse Ears" look and the computer features. I watch all the milage indicators (2) as I let off the gas and use it to find the absoluet shortest route to work. The Speedo offset behind the wheel is easier to look at.
Question, on the non-navs where is the DSC lamp? I could not find it on a buddies MCS. If that is true, then there's a added feature.

I love the look as well. In germany, where I live, the local people are very blunt and will tell you the truth even if it hurts you. When I told my neighbors that I was getting the Mini they said, "It's a neat car, it's really cool, but it's not so good for safety with the speedo in the middle". Thats not a dierect translation, but it's close. When they saw the NAV and speedo on the column, they told me the thought it was the coolest car they ever saw. This is coming from people that just bought a new 7 series BMW.
I think Mini has done a very good job with incorperating the NAv into the nastalgic style of the Cooper. My hats off to the designers.
My wife has a 2002 CR-V with out a NAV. She wants me to put in an aftermarket NAV for her. She just loves mine so much.

It is not a question of whether it is possible, it is a matter of following US safety codes - according to both my reading (here on MCO and elsewhere) and my experience.
MINI could not include one-touch-up windows on US spec vehicles because they did not incorporate into their design a sensor that will stop the window from closing on a hand or other body part (neck). This is a US-regulated safety issue. If they choose to add the sensor, they can provide the one-touch-up.
These safety codes were enacted in the early to mid 90's from my best understanding. There are cars in the US with one-touch-up and no sensor ('90 Subaru Legacy LS, for instance). It was these early cars without the sensors that created the problems which led to the safety codes that are now in place.
Boy, that was a mouthful!
