Is the new MINI a cult car yet?

Do you guys think it is? There is definately a panache and utter coolness about driving them... For example, I know there are people worth $30 million driving them, and people who aren't worth that much driving them. They are just that cool. Does anybody think new MINIs will reach such status as the old beetle ('the people's car')? Im feeling pretty optimistic

Do you mean a cult car, as opposed to a colt car? Not sure what a colt car is, but I think from the beginning it was definately a cult car...

I'm not sure what you mean by "colt car," (perhaps you mean "cult" car?), but after almost three years of motoring, I'm still insanely pleased by peeking out the window and seeing my MINI! And even still, running little errands OR taking cross-country trips in her thrills me and makes me SMILE.

All that matters to me is that I think the MINI is classic and fun for any price bracket or category!

For a moment I thought he was refering to the old Dodge Colt

I certainly hope the MINI will never be like that

I was really scared thinking of the MINI as a Colt car, but then, figuring you meant cult, I'd have to say no, not yet. Too new, imo. When we see used MINIs picked up tinkered with, resprayed, or personalized even more than what we've seen.........AND we still keep the upper incomes interested........then it might be a cult car. At the moment I think owners (including me) are transfixed by the shiny newness and extensive warranty....MINIs are just too precious right now. We may well be on the road to cult greatness though...I hope so!!! Most owners I know definitely have the personality for it.

Your edit didn't take in the thread title, so I edited it to reflect CULT, rather than COLT!

I don’t know about a cult car. I got mine in mid 02 long before any cult ever started. I bought it for what I know the old one was and represented in handling performance from owning a 64 and 67 many years ago. That was it plane and simple. No cult and no salesman.

I called a dealer, put my name on a list and when they called back a month later I said I want one and this is what I want, that easy. If I could have bought it online from MINI I would have bypassed the dealer all together. I don’t need no stink ‘in salesman when I know what I want.

So it may be a cult car for you, but not for me, I bought mine because of a performance based experience I have with the old Minis and had nothing to do with fads and cults.

Yeah, but what about the Pirate and Zombie cults you are involved with.......don't they also include a suspicious amount of MINI owners, as well?

Ouch. Couldn't you have just said "that was dumb of me?" Not all of us blondes are as slow as you.

I tend to go for car with a big enthusiasts background... but it's not the REASON i go for them. Just a BIG plus I have been asked about my "mini cult" a few times though, referring to the local club.

Brewsky!!! Although knowing Yucca's gun-fetish, that was a good guess, too!

It is SO hard to guage where MINIs culturally are at present....I'm too close to the situation, lost in my own MINI world. I love my MINI...others really seem to respect it, but I'm noticing that there also seems to be a "heart" reaction from many MINI owners who just as easily could have bought some other car. But they didn't...or in some cases....couldn't. So if love is involved then yeah, maybe the cult thing isn't such a stretch.

For me it's like '03s The Italian Job. People told me (even recently) that it was a good movie...they really enjoyed the film. Really? I have no idea...all I saw was MINIs. Whether it was a good movie or not is frankly beyond my grasp.

Now, as for pirate and zombie cults, yeah we definitely have that going on, too, but that's a NAM thing...not MINI2, not MINIUSA...just NAM (at this point )!!

Thanks MINIclo.

I just asked the question because it was brought up on bimmerforums.com (my home turf)about E36 M3's. I really spend more time there because I have an M3. When I heard the BMW was producing a new MINI I realized how great the car would be, and the ideas and "aura" connected to MINI's made me really excited. Now that mom is ordering one, I've just recently started spending time here (great forum btw ). This is a little off topic, but some guys did something really funny on bimmerforums... they made a "boobie club"
if anybody is interested, we can start one here. You just put what number boobie you are in your sig, for example, i'd be boobie club#1 and so on. Just a thought. Thanks again for the replies.
