Several of my friends are interestred in a bulk buy, several cases, of MINI oil filters. The $10 dealer price is just a wee steep. Have any of you sourced these in quantity? If so, who did you buy from and why? What brand of filter was it? And the biggie, what was the cost? Any other relevant info??

I get mine for about six bucks a piece from Classic MINI in Ohio. Genuine OEM stuff.

 

Check Ebay - I got 10 for about $5.50 each...

 

You tell Classic MINI you're a member of NAM and they give you a discount. I'm thinking GB quoted you the discount price because he's to smart a guy not to know about it.

Does any one know why these things have such a strange little oil filter assembly to begin with?

I mean, why would a modern car NOT just use a good quality spin on filter?

And does anyone know of an external oil filter adapter designed for just mounting a spin on filter assembly to the firewall and plumbing it up?

 

It is a bit of a hassle at first, but once you get your 36mm socket, changing filters is not difficult and I like being able to inspect the filter closely when I am done. . . something I really cannot do with a spin on filter. . .

 

Oh I know it's not really "difficult". I'd label it more of a pain in the a$$ than anything and if there is no direct benefit in better filtering, I just think it's a rather stupid design. Stupid designs are out of place on this car and the oil filter and the shifter cable connections represent the only two I've seen so far.

 

Why not just the oil filter sans housing? Without the metal housing, there's less environmental impact -- less volume going into a landfill and think of all the energy saved from not having to mine/forge/fabricate the metal can. However, I wonder how many filter cans could be made out of a 36mm socket. The biggest benefit - the filter should be relatively inexpensive without the metal can, but that doesn't seem to be the case...

Bare-naked filters do offer up a cheap form of entertainment [best enjoyed while sampling a fine barley beverage] - you can unpleat the filter and hopefully NOT see anything trapped in the filter material.
