FS: Blacked-out Tinted Tail lights used
These are custom painted tail lights, I believe the person I bought them off of took the factory(02-04) tail lights apart and did a professional tint spray. These were off a show car. The moldings around the tail lights are not perfect. When put on a MINI, you can't really tell unless you look closely (view pics below) I personally loved the way these looked on my car and ran them for about 6 months, but I live in Western Pennsylvania and have been hassled by the police to many times.
Funny thing is, is that everytime I was pulled over, I told them they were a factory option, and I guess since the MINI is still kinda new and rare(in this area) they had no clue, and couldn't prove me wrong, so they let me go
So I'm not sure if they are legal in your area, but you might wanna check before buying these.
Asking $100 USD (Paypal prefered)

How big a deal are they to swap? I've read conflicting stories about removing and installing the entire tail light assembly.
Do they noticably decrease the light output at the back of the car?

The swap is pretty easy, it's just a pain to turn the wrench, it's only one long bolt, but you can only turn the wrench a half a turn, so it's more timely. (Open the side door thingies in your trunk, and you'll see what i mean.) The bulbs just plug out and plug right in. You don't need directions at all.
out of 1-5 (5 being the hardest)
this install is definitely a 1
The light output does decrease, and can be harder to see in strong daylight when the sun shines directly on it, but it is still noticeable. I ran my top(3rd brakelight) un-tinted, for easier braking visibility. I was also gonna run LED lights to make them brighter, but never got around to it, I didn't think they were that bad. I think I have a pic at home of the lights on, but not sure, I'll check then post it up tomorrow if I do.

My Pops picked that up for me at a ford swap meet. I seen them in one of his ford catalogs before. Not sure if I like it or not, just something different.

Well, I know this is a bad picture, I took a pic of a pic cause my scanner is at work, but you get the idea. This picture is just with the driving lights on. Obviously they get 2x brighter when the brake is pressed.

I confess to possessing no expertise at all on such things, but I persist in believing that two light bulbs will cast more light than one bulb of the same wattage. At least that is how things work in my ceiling light fixtures. Of course, I've yet to try to affix my MINI to my ceiling

Well, I've done a litle work in theater, and I know that two follow spots on the same actor are brighter than one, though granted they are not spotted from the same location.
Also, it is normal to light a stage area from either three or four directions (the McCandless [sp?] method), and you definitely see a lot more that way. I think more lights mean more light.
I am even more confident that the larger lit area that results from the brake light mod (top and bottom instead of just bottom) is visible from a greater distance thanks to its size.
