Clutch pedal wear at 2400miles?

Hey all,

Well, its been a week and a half now since I picked up Kathy and I have loved every second of it as my 2400+ odometer will attest:smile:  . So far a few minor glitches (speaker rattle in the passenger door not yet fixed, drivers seat wouldnt slide forward for rear access) that Im not too worried about since one is fixed and the other im waiting to upgrade my speakers before I worry about. But one issue that has come up is the clutch pedal. The three rubber strips that run top to bottom are wearing out at what seems to me like an incredible rate . Every other day or so I brush so much rubber shavings off the pedal that it lightens by several shades. Its gotten to where the strips are noticeably smaller at the top edge than the bottom and smaller overall than the other two pedals. I realize rubber is not the most durable material and the clutch pedal probably sees the most wear but this still seems excessive to me. Is this typical wear or do I have a bad pedal? In either case, if I had to guess I'd say I have maybe 10k left in that pedal at most before I wear all the way down to the metal, is this something my warranty will take care of or should I just start looking for some aftermarket pedal sets? Thanks all

I don't have any shavings or wear in mine, 2900 miles. What kind of footwear do you use? Sandpaper boots?

I don't have a problem on my 03 MCS and nor have I heard of anyone else complaining of similar problems. I bet if you argue with your MA, you could get it replaced but if the rubber is that weak (or maybe you drive with golf shoes... ) then I would say just spend a few bucks and get some flashy cool metal ones. Lots of vendors sell them, mossmini $83, gotmini $93 and I know I have seen them elsewhere cheaper, just forget. do a search.

I noticed the same thing as well when my car was new (I have a 08/03). I even lost a chunk of rubber from one of the outer stripe after just 5000 miles. The good news is the wear seems to slow down after that initial break in.

I still think I may have to replace the pedals in a few years though

Well, i do wear boots on a daily basis. Not hiking or work boots, just the usual "im trying to look rugged" boots that happen to be a bit more durable on me than sneakers.

Maybe it has something to do with the tread. I wear sneakers and sandals.

I wear a flat bottom shoe (like converse) and the rubber strip on my
MCS is worn a little too. The MCS's clutch pedal is too close to the
floor and the bottom of my foot (ball of my foot) slides up/down the
pedal a little when I clutch in/out.

never had this problem on my previous cars or my other MT car.
The clutch pedal on those cars are located higher off the floor.

I added wider pedals, that I had bought years ago for my honda, shortly after I got the car. I recommend it, if you can handle having wider pedals. It made a huge improvement on how it feels to use them in comparison to the tiny pedals that are stock.
