Busted......

I got to work this morning at 5:00 AM as is my usual , only to find that the I.T. **** had evidently done a spot check of my computer to see if I had any unlicensed software on it cause we are due for a spot check soon. low and behold he has added NAM to the "access denied" list in our surf control ,and I am no longer able to peruse the site , even in my off moments. Our company is involved with lots of top secret military programs ,and our email and internet systems are very strict. So sadly I will not be able to post during the day until I get home(where I am now). Even wierder , he neglected to include MINI2 , so I'll be spending more time there during the day, even though I find I feel alienated by the predominantly international (read:British) flavor of that site.

That is a bummer. If it happened to me, work would go by extremely slow!

Well its like where I work for the government we tell people write a letter and get their supervisor to sign it. Then it gets forwarded to my boss. I work in IT and yet some of my fav sites are blocked (such as Ebay ).

Needless to say very actually try to get a site unblocked.

yeah ,withdrawal..that's it! It's like that Dilbert series about how the intern Asok has "an internet monkey" on his back, and "he can quit any time he wants to!" Asking IT to turn it back on would not be advisable as he probably has a full record of the time I spend on this site ,and it would undoubtably be justifiable grounds for immediate dismissal. "weaksauced" indeed. LOL

I have often wondered about sites being blocked. I work at a small office and no sites are blocked, but at your place, after a site is blocked and you try to access it, does it send an internal email to the IT **** warning him that you're screwing around or does the non-working browser just say something like, "this site is not accessible from this location."?

Bring your own laptop and hook into the local area network via wireless or ethernet. Cover it with a sheet for that stealthy look.

Don't forget not to get caught.

ahhh i would hate it if my company did that since after buying my MCS just 2 weeks ago, I've been hooked to this site..... but we're pretty lenient, even x-rated sites are not banned

I have a solution for you... I'm sure you have a broadband connection at home, just setup a socks/proxy server. Point your browswer to your public IP, and voila.. you can get to NAM again..

Can you set up a VPN connection to your home machine? If so, do that and surf NAM while dialed into it. My boss does this to his servers at home and is able to just connect to them when he wants. Don't have any clue how to configure it, but I will if it ever gets to the point where Mother Xerox comes in and has say over the servers in my building...

I feel lucky, at work we have most non-work related websites blocked, but for some odd -and awesome- reason, I still have access to NAM

Ah!! Someone with a Treo AND a MINI~ . I've had the 600 for 2 yrs and I love it. Internet through Sprint, and it works quite well. Does the 650 work with the aux option? - or are you bluetoothed in your MINI? Do you recommend upgrading to the 650?

You need this

Remember back in the "olden days" (when we shoveled the driveway with a kitchen spoon before walking 5 miles to school in a snowstorm) there used to be software that would toggle your game over to a static Lotus 1-2-3 screenshot?

Well, here's a high tech updated....http://www.stealthswitch.com/

I tried such a thing. But with our VPN then all traffice including internet goes through the VPN. Therefor I was still screwed.

Start your own business and in 6 months see how many sites you have your IT folks block. Better yet track the sites visited and see how much money the company you now own is spending to have folks visit non work sites.

No, I just get this really rude hand made out of x's ,and a huge

ACCESS DENIED.Something called "surf control".I have a fair amount of "down" time thanks to iso 9001,and the absurd rules and regulations that govern every dotted i and crossed T.I have to wait ,sometimes for hours (or days)
for the team from QC to assemble itself so they can "witness" what I do(fancy bonding , or meticulous assembly invoving the torquing of every screw, nut, bolt ,washer etc.Can be quite tedious, but thanks to Morton Thiokol and the space shuttle challenger disaster, this is the status quo for space based assemblies.) I can't say I really blame IT for this stance, but I do not understand why I can still access MINI2?????????That'll probably be next if I abuse that too Meanwhile I can still communicate from home, like NOW

If your using Internet Explorer, go into tools, internet settings, then select the security tab, click on restricted sites, and then hit the "sites" button, scroll down to www.northamericanmotoring.com and remove it from the list, this should allow you to surf once again to your favorite site.

He also may have modified your security access, and to change it back it would take a while to explain here

surf control is applied at the companies server ,and only someone with administrative priviledge can access this.I tried what you suggest above right away ,but my restriction occurs outside my computer at the companies server, but thanks for the suggestion anyway. Jock
