Cabrio rear window hazard

With my new MCSc just a few weeks away from delivery now I am concerned about the problem a few owners have had with the rear window breaking. My biggest concern is that it may break while my two young kids are riding in the back seat. I am assuming that the glass is safety glass and will break into a bunch of small pieces. It has been a long time since I have seen broken safety glass and I can not remember what it is like. I realize that it is called safety glass for a reason but is their a possibility of someone being hurt by the glass pieces falling all over them?

Of course most of the time the top will be down and this will not be an issue.

From what I've heard, the window hasn't blown out while out driving around. I could be mistaken as I haven't been following this closely

I thought they have been breaking while the top was down, I might be mistaken though. Anyone else have some more info?

There is lots of information in the MINI2 forum about when it has happened, warranty issues, etc. but nothing about the safety issue of the glass falling on a person. Most cases have occured while the cars have been parked somewhere but there are a few cases that occured while someone was driving.

I just wanted to ask the opinions of people on this forum if there might be a safety issue in the event that the window broke and the glass fell on my children sitting in the back seat.

Safety glass is designed to break into little round chunks with no sharp edges. From what I have heard, that is mostly true, but not 100% true.

I guess you can put a light tint over the glass and it may help minimize the glass from shattering and flying into little pieces. I thought it was from
the cabin pressure change when you close the doors or open it real quick.

My window shattered while the car was parked in my garage and broke in tiny little pieces.. and now I have glass all over the back seat in fact very few pieces on the floor. And yes the edges are sharp and yes I am worry because our GSD rides with us every week end and both of us have MCCs.. Hopefully it will not happen to Stella" and Mini will replace my roof under warranty ( I am going to Mini in a few hours .. maybe I get there before freezing !!!!)

I cannot image what could have happen if the window broke while driving and with the dog in the car....

That is a brilliant idea! I believe the tint will definitely hold the pieces together and it may stay in place or just fall as one piece onto the luggage compartment cover. Surely it will keep the pieces of glass from flying forward enough to reach the back seat.

Thanks for the awesome idea. I will feel a lot better about having my kids ride back there after I get it tinted.
