Navigation DVD update details
After getting the run around from Mini and NavTeq about an updated navigation DVD I have some info. It looks like the 2005 DVD is going to be released in the middle of March for a price of 199.00. You need to call 888-628-6277 to place an order at that time.
I received my 05 mini in Oct 04 and was told by my "service advisor" that any updates that come out within the first year will be free... Well to my dismay that does not seem to be the case. After NavTeq said the cost will be 199.00 for an updated DVD. I called mini customer service and they said that you only get one DVD with the purchase of the nav unit and that is the one that ships with the car... I then said that this is not what my "service advisor" said when I ordered / purchased the car. The mini customer service agent then said they are not responsible for what service advisors say and to follow up with the advisor.
I then asked how a 2005 car ship with a DVD from 2003 and not get any update free of charge... The response I got was that NavTeq is responsible for making the DVD and that they just take the latest they offer..... This doesn't make sense... Other bmw cars have nav discs from 2004...
Well, now it is time to go back to my "service advisor" to see why I was told I would get an updated DVD. To me it just doesn't make sense why somebody at mini didn't say.. "Hey.. we are still shipping an old DVD with these cars" It all must come down to money.. The money they make on the navigation option must not offset the cost of upgrading the DVD... I would have no problem if my car came with a 2004-2 or even a 2004-1 and then I had to pay for an update...

I've purchased two 2005 MINIs with the nav system and have run into the SAME exact problem you have. In fact, my latest MINI is set to arrive into the dealership on this Saturday and it really suck that I'm going to get stuck with another 2003 data disc. Oy!

Looks like it's time to do some eMule work here as there's no way in hell I'm paying for an updated DVD after putting out the bucks for two MINI nav systems in the last five months! I'm up for doing a PayPal collection (say $10 per head) and then doing evals all around. To hell with NavTech and MINI!

If there was ever a good case for piracy...this is it
There's no way I'd pay another $200 either.
i was told somewhere that i will get one updated DVD after puschase.
there got to be a way. this is crazy for us to use old CDs. some roads are not even there. what is it gonna do when i have a NAV dont know the roads around me?
Should went for after markets!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok let's start a NAV DVD underground group.
who has a DVD burner?

Anyway, keep me in the loop, got the same BS from them and the run around from Mini customer service.
Its not like the nav is free, for $1700 and lots of profit they could negotiate a deal to include the correct year update. To treat it like you just buy the nav unit from them and your are on your own for the map info is ridiculous.
Yes...please elaborate on this "eval all around" and "paypal" thing. If it's what I think it is...PM me:smile:

To me it is one thing to have missing roads.. But to also have outdated business and restaurants in the nav database. Being new to my area, you don't know how many times I ended up at the corporate headquarters of a place I searched for through the location finder in the nav. It was funny the first time but that wore off after it happened a couple more times. I just don't get it... They should have told me when I added the nav option that I would get a dvd that is almost 2 years old and that the cost is actually 199 more than the 1500 or so I paid for the option..

How you execute such procurement, should you decide to, is up to your conscience.
Maybe someone needs to do a group collection to raise funds to bring an updated NAV DVD to the Dragon? Then everyone can check it out firsthand, to decide for themselves if the update is worth ordering, or if they would rather stick with the '03 version.
"No, officer, that's not my FireWire DVD burner in the boot. I have no idea how that got there!"
After paying for the Nav system and then not receiving the courtesy of an "upgrade" pricing (typical in the software industry), I'd say my conscience tells me "the hell with them"

Check ebay for the updated DVD around April. While your'e at it, you may want to pick up and updated TIS/ETK CD set, too. Not that I would know anything about that.

I got a good one- she can read a map without having to turn it to face the orientation of the car. She also backs a truck with a race trailer attached better than I do. And hasn't needed any upgrades in 10 years! But she is due for one (at the jewler's) this spring.

It's about:
1. The right map, when you need it.
Example - Driving back home from VA (to CA), I pulled off to get some food in West Virginia. The Nav got me back to the freeway (one of those funky 'exit but no entry' interchanges.)
2. An unemotional navigator.
Examples -
Without Nav:
Me: "Honey, do I turn left or right up here?"
Me: "Honey?"
Honey:
"I DON'T KNOW!"
Me: "Je$u$ Chri$t, you've got the map, don't you?"
With Nav: (including British voice hack)
Me: "Which way do I turn?" (thinking to myself)
Nav: "In one-quarter mile, turn left to join the motorway"
Honey: "That's SO cool"
The Nav also never tells you what you SHOULD have done, it tells you what you NEED TO DO.
Example:
Honey: "You should have turned left back there."
Me: "That's nice, what do I do now?"
Honey: "You should have turned left back there."
Me: "I appreciate that, but I need to know what to do now, not what I should have done back there."
Best of all, even if it DOES get you lost, you have a common enemy instead of a point of contention.
Nav - $1700
Map - Free
A passenger at peace and not on the warpath - priceless

Come to think of it, I do remember the first TSD rally we tried together. One of the officials from a checkpoint approached us at the post-rally restaurant gathering. He recognized us becuse when we drove past him, windows down, we were arguing so loudly he could hear us clearly from over 50 feet away.
In CA, I believe that's enough to get a noise ordinance citation, like they issue to "boom-cars."
The checkpoint worker's wife said that they officiate now instead of competing, because they sounded the same as we did when they rode together.
(edit: we don't do TSD any more. strictly gimmick rallies only!)
For me, the contention stopped after I learned marriage rule #1 for men.
Even when you are absolutely correct, the woman is always right. Do not fight with her, because even if you win, you lose.
I'm taking delivery of my new MINI at the end of March, and by all this talk it seems as though I'm going to get stuck with the old DVD also, although testing your new DVD definately seems like a good idea, I mean, I need to figure out how much they've changed the 2005 DVD, right?
How come there is 2005-2 disc, where the 2005-1 goes??
The most ridiculous thing is the my 2003 disc don't have my current address
I doesn't make any sense when I have a Jan 2005 build car with that old crappy map disc.

It will most likely be a 2005-1 since it would be released during the first have of the year. Or knowing how mini has done things in the past they will label it 2005-2 or maybe even 2006-1 to make it last longer and then not upgrade it again until 2007 or even 2008.

LOL ... I use the "who ever is with you on this trip" NAV ....
