Hood release inop

Sometime in the last month my hood release gave up. I have a 2013 countryman S.
It was tight when I tried to pop the hood today then the cable tip popped out of the bracket. I removed the plastic foot panel and reattached the cable but I still can't get the hood to release. There's no access to anything in the drivers side wheel well.

What's the way forward to fix this?

You will need to jack up the front end, have a few lights and a long prybar. When under the hood looking up from the bottom, look towards the top of the radiator. Look for the hook that holds the hood closed and you will need to pry it away from the latch. It is more difficult to do on the countryman than it is on the R56 Minis but with some effort and patience, it can be done. Ive accidentally closed the hood without assembling the cable connection and had to do this a few months ago. You will get frustrated...

Spray them with grease and the cable slide end also so they dont rust and stick. https://www.ecstuning.com/b-wd_40-parts/

This led me to switching to hood pins last year.
