R50/53 Installing options in R53 from retired R50
Installing options in R53 from retired R50
I've had a 2006 R50 for the past decade or so, and it was pretty optioned out. This summer I bought a 2006 R53, and as much as I love it, it doesn't have every option my old one does. Since I still have the R50, how feasible would it be to pull the applicable parts from it and install them in the R53?
Specifically, the r50 has but the r53 is missing:
Auto headlights (r50 has xenon HIDs with the headlight washer, r53 has halogens without the washer)
Auto wipers
Auto dimming rearview mirror with Homelink
HK sound system
Also, the tach on the r50 has a nice shiny chrome trim, while the r53's is a cheap-looking light gray. How easy would it be to swap these between the two cars? I imagine I'll probably have to remove the steering column to change the stalks for the lights and wipers anyway

The rear view mirror is trivial. It’s just a straight swap—the wiring should already be present. The trim around the mirror just unclips, though I don’t remember exactly how the mirror fastens.
The tach should be similarly easy. It’s just two bolts and a connector to remove, though it can be a little hard to slide off.
To do the stalks, I think it was just popping off the column trim and maybe one bolt. It’s been a long time since I did mine when I added the factory alarm. I don’t remember how the rain sensing works. I think you need a sensor and a special windshield or something? Maybe some BCM coding for that one, too?
No idea about the sound system.
I want to say you’d have to do some wiring for the lights in addition to adding the leveling sensors, but I’ve never done that swap. Someone here has though. Might require some coding as well. Dunno.
