Throttle body or ?????

I have a 2006 R53 with about 77k miles on it. Last week suddenly the EML light came on, there was no throttle response and the car was in limp mode, I did make it home as it wasn't too far. I used my Scan Tool and got codes P1242 and P1689. My initial research kind of led me to believe the throttle body was defective and I was ready to change it. I talked to a couple of experts and one said it might not be the throttle body and the other said the harmonic balancer was going so now I'm totally confused and for sure more troubleshooting is necessary. Can anyone here offer any other ideas? Thank you for your time and help!

If the harmonic balancer was going you would be able to smell burning rubber. That's caused when the center rubber core separates from the outer pulley allowing the inner to spin against the outer. Another method is to drive the freeway 60mph in 6th gear and immediately accelerate. Watch your RPMs. If they rise but the car does not accelerate, it's your pulley.

Spray both the throttle body and the MAP sensor with an electronic cleaner before replacing either. Also check to ensure that the throttle body butterfly valve is not sticking. Vacuum should open it easily.

Thanks for the quick response!! I do not remember any smell of burning rubber and I have not tried to drive the car since the incident but at that time it would only go about 8mph so the freeway observation might not work. I like your throttle body ideas however, sound like I could do it without removing the throttle body?

have you looked up your codes? what do they mean? every dtc has a description.

post those here so others know what is going on. that way knowledgeable folks that dont have the dtc memorized might have some ideas

Yes, you can easily spray down the throttle body while attached. Just ensure that the butterfly valve is moving easily. To others: OBD II codes are easily looked up on Google.

friendly point: dont expect others to research your dtc. look them up and provide them in your post

Could be your coil. That will also put your car into 'Limp Mode'.
