AC Not blowing cold. Easiest approach.

Recently acquired a 2011 mini Cooper s Convertible type. I didn't spend much on the car and am trying to prevent replacing the whole AC system.

I had it diagnosed at a shop, here were the notes.

-AC does not blow cold.
-Watched pressure with AC Machine and found pressure slightly low. Performed AC service.
-Found system only slightly low. .39 of .46 fully charged system to capacity.
-Found AC still does not blow cold. Pressures equalized and compressor clutch not engaging.
-Lifted vehicle and checked circuitry to AC compressor Clutch. Found Power and ground present but AC compressor clutch does not engage.
-Tech recommend replacement of AC Compressor Drier and Expansion Valve.
-If no Metal is found in lines could get away with replacing just compressor.

Based off the notes, it looks like power is getting to the compressor, the system is charged to the correct capacity, but the compressor is still not engaging.

My two main questions.
1. Is it possible to replace just the clutch on the compressor and avoid draining the whole system? Is this the fix? or completely unrelated?
2. How likely is there to be metal in the lines? And if there were, would this prevent the system from running even if I replaced the compressor.
3. Are the Drier & expansion Valve necessary for short term fix?

Looking for the most cost effective option. This isn't a daily driver, but it would be nice to have the AC running even if it isn't a permanent solution. I just can't get behind spending $2,000+ at the shop if I can take the time to do this myself when a clutch is about $50 and the whole compressor is about $200.

Ask the shop tech if he/she can install the compressor clutch below on your original MINI compressor without disconnecting the refrigerant lines. If not, contact some other reputable shops.

Amazon Amazon

Look for the product review below stating that this clutch can be installed without removing the compressor.

Thanks for sharing. For $50 and some tools I already have, I'm willing to try the clutch first and give it a shot.

That's what I would do too. Best of luck with the fix.
