Doing a major service and re-sealing the front of the N18 as ****in' everything was leaking oil. Oil filter housing, turbo feed and return lines, serpentine belt was end of life, 2 out of the 3 motor mounts were completely shot with the lower third one on its way too. I'm waiting on the final parts order and going over my work when I noticed that the bolts for the exhaust manifold were covered in oil.
These pictures are sequential in time. The first picture is from 3 months ago when I did the valve covers, its purpose is to show where (one of) the leaks was: that black spot on the turbo heat shielding. The next 3 are from when I pulled the oil filter housing and before I cleaned anything. The final picture is after I put a can of brake clean and some elbow grease to cleaning up the mess.
My concern is that the bolts on the exhaust manifold are wet as seen in the final picture. My valve covers were leaking directly above that. However, I fixed that leak months ago. Additionally, this leak is on the "inside" of the heat shielding, where I would expect the valve cover leak to run down the side of the block. Not "out" here. Was that the source of that oil on the exhaust manifold, or should I be concerned about something else? Googling turned up lackluster results, mostly from other cars
