ABS Issue Sensor/sensor ring

HELP!!!!! I am desperate. We own a 2014 JCW Countryman ALL4. It has been a money pit and a nightmare. It drives nice and is comfortable, however, it keeps needing expensive repairs. I can do most maintenance things, and have but the ABS light came on last year and took it to what I thought was reputable Euro car repair place. (There were literally millions of dollars of cars in the lot.) Had a bad left hand sensor and they replaced it. Before we got it home, it threw the same codes. The repair shop replaced the sensor, claiming that the sensor fault followed to the right side, and replaced the suspect unit. Not a few miles later the code threw again. I went to Autozone had it read and it pointed to the right front sensor. After doing swapping etc. I have concluded it is not either ABS sensor.

I have no desire to take it to Mini, as I don't want to go through the bulls*** of explaining what is up, being ignored and having them tell me it is the sensor. (and charging an arm and a leg.)

So, I have thought perhaps it is the sensor ring which I understand is buried behind the bearing housing. I am fully capable of removing the housing, however, I can not find it as a part to replace. It is integral to the bearing assembly? Has anyone had this issue? My other fear, of course, is that it is the ABS control unit but have no way to verify that.

Searching the web has yielded no promising results. We have been driving the car. I think, tho am not sure, that it doesn't have 4WD when the ABS/traction control/chassis stabilization s*** is illuminated....

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The abs sensor are plastic and they can break easy. You have to clean out the old hole they set in and also make sure the bearing is not rubbing on the back of the sensor.

Does not matter if they have high end cars out front, they dont know the in/outs of MINI like i do. lol

I have done a bunch of these sensors and broke a couple of them on install

What you do is take a bur tool and clean out the hole and then shave the tabs on the side of the sensor a hair. This makes inputting them easy and they will not bind. If they bind you can crack the heads. You can see the little hole at the top (well on its side) and its held in with a little screw.

The front wheel bearing.

On the back side near the seal, you can get a bunch of rust and that can rub and damage the head. Sometimes even the seal will flare out and rub it if its really rusty. It can also not rear the sensor if the back is damaged with rust. Also if the sensor if not all the way in the hole (rusted), it cannot read the back of the bearing.

Their are two pins in the sensor plug that insert (blue) into the body cable plug. If not lined up they can bend and not connect.

Make sure the back side of the bearing is ok. If not it will need replaced.

Check all those and see whats up.

Thanks
Mike

they only thing I will ad is I know that OP is having a shop do it , But for the DIY folks, make sure to clean up the face of the Knuckle and sensor bore (I use a green disk on a air die grinder for the face and then use a wire brush pipe cleaner bit to clean the sensor bore) Then add never seize on the bearing mount face (care full not to get any on the magnetic ring) and some dielectric to the bore of the sensor (wipe the sensor clean)
Lastly do not crank down the axle shaft nut with all the ugga ugga's get the proper torque and set it or you will destroy the bearing.

After jacking the car up, pulling the rotor, caliper, shield, and abs sensor, I could see on the backside of the bearing a small section of magnetic materials, like magnetic sign stuff. It fell off when I touched it. So, there is no sensor "ring" but this stuff on the backside of the bearing. I suspect this is the issue. going to check the other side. Anyone has this or any insite???

and finally...

It turns out that the bearing hub has a magnetic ring on the backside and it was damaged. I put a new hub on (much easier than I thought) and the problem went away. Probably saved myself hundreds from taking it to a dealer.
